Advice on new android phone

I am wanting an android phone with current specs, mid price, good camera with the option to add a custom ROM like GrapheneOS or similar.

I am trying to get rid of using google. I will still use maps and maybe some others but it will be with a spoof account. I have been looking at the pixel 4a or 5. Next question is if I do get a pixel and keep stock OS, can I get by with not using google services and using FDroid?

You cannot keep the stock OS if you want to do it right.
