After LG restore, SMS/MMS recovered messages cause phone to bog down.

Unfortunately, my G4 suffered moisture damage earlier this week, and the speakers and micro USB port started malfunctioning. This was on a warranty service refurbished replacement VzW sent me last fall; the vibration always felt/sounded off its bearings, on it so no big loss.

When I get my Asurion replacement (a "like-new" one :-\ ), I was reminded of the first thing to disappoint me about the phone. The messaging app is extremely sluggish after you recover old SMS/MMS messages. So much so, that the entire G4 pretty much seizes up. There are plenty of things I've come to like about my G4, but I'm of the school of thought that NO messaging app should ever behave this sluggishly. I'll never use any VzW app, if I can help it. Any suggestions?

Have you tried using Hangouts or Google Messenger? Or other 3rd party SMS apps, like Textra or Chomp SMS?

I've tried Textra and Hangouts before, honestly wasn't impressed. All my past Androids, the default messenger app worked just fine. It's only an issue with this G4.

I've never been impressed with LG's stock text app. I think I tried it when I first got the G4 and quickly dumped it. Google Messenger gets the job done though.

I'm giving Google Messenger a try, finally. So far, I really like it; very snappy response and clean.

Okay, my replacement "like-new" G4 may very well have the bootloop or some other issue. I find this one has frozen up and/or rebooted itself 10 times at least since I received it yesterday.

Edit: got back in touch with Asurion, they're sending me another replacement on Monday after their troubleshooting attempts were in vain. I'm really getting tired of dealing with this, but it looks like I'll now have 4 OEM batteries to lean on. So I got that going for me, which is nice...

Those refurbs with intermittent problems are a huge pain! Good luck with the replacement. Also, note the first three digits of the SN that they send you.

Also, I found out through the "LG Phone From" app that my replacement device is a 508 S/N.

I just installed to give it a spin. Useful app especially when getting a refurb phone or when purchasing from Ebay, Craigslist, Swappa, etc.
There's is a field for stolen IMEI but I think only works for Korea. Also, "latest firmware" shows up as "N" - likely I don't have the latest since my carrier hasn't provided it.
