Airplane mode ?!? ...why not just power off?

I'm just being curious and I never fly but a friend is on a flight from Pittsburgh to Atlanta and said before getting on the plane "putting phone in airplane mode" ... and it made me wonder ...
... why not just power off? Does it suck more battery to power off then power on later? ... or is there some other valid reason to use airplane mode rather than just power off?

Can anyone clue me in?

You may want to read a book, listen to music, play games. There's still a lot you can do in airplane mode.
