AirPods won't play sound

I have a Redmi Note 6 Pro (Miui Global 12.0.1) and recently bought some AirPods. They work fine with other devices, and they pair successfully with my phone, but they don't play any audio. I do hear the pairing and unpairing tones, but if I try to play sound from any app on the phone, nothing. I've tried resetting the AirPods, turning Bluetooth off and on, rebooting the phone, and resetting the bluetooth settings. No joy. Has anyone run into this issue?

Welcome to Android Central! When the Airpods are connected and you press one of the Volume buttons on the phone, do you see any options with the volume slider? See if you can bring up a separate volume slider for Bluetooth, or if there's an option to choose what to output sound to.

Hi, thanks for responding! I thought of that but there's only the usual three sliders (main volume, notifications, and alarm). I can't find any volume control that's specific to Bluetooth.

Have you tried various different media apps to see if any give any additional audio output options? For example, I know that Spotify has some nonstandard audio output options.
