Alert Slider

I'm a few weeks in with the 5T (switching from several years with Windows Phone/Mobile) and, overall, I really like the phone. Still can't believe how fast it is, although some of that I'm sure is due to the fact that I had a budget Windows phone.

The only feature I truly don't care for is the alert slider. On the Windows side, Quiet Hours was an easy turn on/off from the quick-task bar at top -- that silenced everything except alarms and anyone you entered in your custom list. Setting the phone to vibrate only was simply a matter of turning the volume down.

The slider isn't the easiest thing to move and that being the ONLY way to turn off the ringer seems silly. And since it's a physical switch, it seems to invite failure at some point. I looked through some older posts and it seems it wasn't always that way with OP, so maybe they'll change that back in the future and at least provide another way to turn the ringer off.

In the scheme of things, it's a small negative for me (unless the slider fails!). I'm still very happy with the decision to go with the 5T!

I don't get the slider. Why does it have silent and do not disturb? Also, I keep forgetting to set my phone to silent when it's bedtime. 4:38am today I woke up to some random news alert. Not good.

Does android have quiet hours like windows phone? I've had a good look around the settings but can't find anything like it.

It has Do not disturb and silent because sometimes you don't want to be disturbed, and sometimes you want silence.

For example I put my phone on do not disturb at night when I'm planning to go to sleep, messages and notifications, such as those from random news apps, are silent but the phone will ring for calls and media like podcasts and audio books will play. When I have some appointment or meeting it goes to silent.

Android itself does use a system similar to quiet hours on Windows phone, but it's one of the few AOSP features that Oneplus remove, or at least alter, on their phones to facilitate the alert slider.

I really like the alert slider and find it both conveniently located and easy to use. I can quickly shift from ring to vibrate (do not disturb) without removing it from a pocket. No more searching for the mode I want the phone in. It is also nice that I can modify each of the alert settings to my personal tastes.

Do Not Disturb Mode can always be customized so that you won't get woken up by alerts unless you designate such alerts into your DND settings.

Also, perhaps because your phone is still a couple of weeks old, the alert slider button is still a little hard to move. Perhaps in the next few weeks, the button will "loosen up," so to speak, and things will be easier.

This is a tri-state switch, correct?
I didn't realize this, at first, but now I'm noticing that it's got a "middle position" as well.

Is there an easy way to differentiate between the alert-slider "modes", i.e. off-middle-on; how are they denoted in the UI, so you can set differing levels for each?

In your notification area, next to your WiFi and mobile signal there's an icon. It's a white circle with a dark hyphen/minus symbol in it for do not disturb and a vibrate logo for silent. It doesn't show for normal.

Say 1 is normal, 2 is DND-1, and 3 is DND-2, how do you set them up, separately?
If there's an online diagram or something, that you know of, it might be easier to view?

Read my first reply in this thread, that explains why there are three positions and how they work.

In settings, the first option under *customisation* is *alert slider*. You can set it up from there.

In short, the default difference between position 2 and 3 is that #3 allows phone to vibrate for alerts/calls. #2 is truly DND (other than your set alarms). You can, however, adjust settings for any of the positions in Settings > Customization/Alert slider.

I don't find that option. After hitting settings, I don't see customizations or alert slider.

Duh, yes it's there. If it was a snake it would have bit me. Sheesh. Chalk it up to old age.

Yeah, me too, that "age thing" ;-]
Once you see it, you kinda' scratch your head, as to why you weren't before, or that's how I was anyway.

Works nicely, now that I know how to config, thanks to all who responded here.
