What are the main complaints on the stock keyboard?
My main one so far is that the word suggestor and spell check seems a lot dumber than the iPhone? Anyway to fix that??
What are the best 3rd party keyboard apps, and their advantages/disadvantages? Do they slow down the Note 8 or consume a lot of memory?

2 of the best are Google keyboard and Swiftkey. I'd say give them a try and see how you like em

Google keyboard is my favorite. I've used it exclusively for a couple years on all my Android devices.

Blackberry Keyboard for me. Flicking words up from letters, and swiping back across to delete last word. (It also has swipe typing option, which I don't use).
Only downloadable via a BlackBerry Manager apk made by the user Conite from Crackberry forums.)

Initially Samsung keyboard took some time for me to adjust. Now am fine with it. I liked Gboard earlier but now I don't want any duplicate apps on my phone and want to keep it as clean as possible.

Gboard and Swiftkey are the best out there. I prefer Gboard nowadays. Swiftkey lags at times nowadays. Gboard had no such concerns, thigh there are spots where the Gboard doesn't fit the screen completely, like RSA token for eg

The Samsung keyboard isn't really good, but I've hardly used it for a few days. Maybe with extensive usage it might learn and improve. I just didn't want to start all over again

Samsung keyboard is great. I have no problems with it. I love the spen writing mode of it.

I tried gboard, and it worked much better than the stock keyboard for typing, but I just couldn't get over the vastly different layout of special character keys once you leave the qwerty keyboard. I used stock on my S5 and Note 4 and am far too used to that layout to want to learn an entirely new set up. Can't always teach an old dog new tricks, ya know.

Yeah, the special character layout is very different. Since I used Gboard on all my phones, the layout is familiar to me.

I guess the stock keyboard will improve over time. Stick with it if you don't want to relearn

I think my biggest beef with stock so far is that it's literally making things up as it goes, especially with swipe typing.

For example: I want to type "on" and I swipe from the "o" to the "n." And that should be it. But every single time I do that, it adds an "e" making it "one" instead of "on." The e is on the other side of the keyboard. I really don't even know how the phone/keyboard could make that kind of mistake. So annoying.

I used SwiftKey on all my previous Samsung phones and I love it. It has everything I need and is fully customizable.

What don't you like about the stock Samsung keyboard?
Why do you prefer Gboard over Swiftkey??
Thanks.

I think it comes down to what you are used to. For me it has a lot to do with muscle memory. After having the iPhone for about a year I was used to the iOS keyboard. It took some getting used to when I switched to the Samsung keyboard. Now that I have been using it for about a month I'm used to it and really like it. For those who use Gboard and Swiftkey, it will be hard to get adjusted to the Samsung keyboard right away because you aren't going to be used to it.

I think Samsung just has bad auto correct because English isn't their first language.

For me it's the terrible Auto correct and the fact that when I enter text into a search bar it doesn't automatically as spaces. Really annoying when using Swype.
The stock isn't bad but it's not refined.

Another vote for Swiftkey. Excellent predictions and a lot of different looks available.

The thing is with Swiftkey/Gboard, it's available across all Android devices, and even iOS. So even if I decide to switch Android brands, or even iOS, all my learned words and keyboard layout follows me. Samsung even changes keyboard layouts every year or two, so I find it better to stick to a trusted third party keyboard.

I can completely understand that.
