Allowing first update in a long time, what's procedure?

I'm finally surrendering and I'm going to allow this update my LG G3 has been asking for for several months. Basically just to see if the battery life maybe might improve a little and now the phone is doing some strange things. It will take itself off of vibrate or silent mode at random. Power switch turns the screen off but then it pops right back on. Just little quirks like that.

This will be the first update I've attempted in close to 3 years when I did one for my Galaxy S3 and it really choked the phone down. Back then I was able (somehow) to roll back to the previous version but now they've taken that out.

From what I can tell I need to back up the phone, do the update, then do a factory reset? Over the weekend I looked around for some youtube videos or something that would explain the procedure maybe in some terms that I could understand but I didn't have much luck.

First on the backup. What am I backing up to? What am I backing up? Contacts, videos, pictures, apps? One video showed where you select backup and reset but didn't say anything about choosing the backup destination. Am I backing up to my computer or somewhere else? I'm assuming that once everything is done I will need that backup to reload pictures, videos, etc. back to the phone. But maybe that's not how it goes.

Now on the factory reset. The videos on this were pretty short. They just showed holding down the down volume + power switch then releasing the power switch when the LG logo appears. But is the phone completely powered off and shut down when you do this? They also skipped over how you recover from the reset. Just sign into your Google account and everything gets restored?

My service is through Verizon.

Thanks.

See Backing up an Android Device for backing up.

You don't have to do a factory reset after an update - the most you should have to do it a system cache clear (but the update should really do that as part of the update procedure). But it never hurts to have a current backup.

Recovering from a reset is just turning the phone on. It will come back with no installed apps and no data. You use the same procedure for restoring the backups that you did for making it. (IOW, the app you backed up your apps with is the one you restore them with. The app you backed up your messages with is the one you restore them with. Etc.)

So essentially just do a backup then let the update do it's stuff? Is that App Backup & Restore thing you mentioned in the other post something on your phone or on the PC?

I may misunderstand you but there is normally no need to backup and reset before accepting a system software update....though you will find the option in Settings, Backup And Reset. Are you worried that just downloading and installing the update may cause subsequent problems? That's how I do it, though I usually do a Cache Partition wipe on my other Androids before and after an update. The nearest thing to that on the G3 is Settings, Storage, Cached Data, and clearing the cache.

Always backup before installing any update. I have a seen enough go bad. LG provides their own backup in the Settings=> Backup & Rest...it saves your backup to an SD card. I backup to Verizon's Cloud for my data, and use LG to just backup my Homescreen/Folders. You could use it to backup everything. In addition, it's okay to do the Factory Reset after updates, especially large ones. It can clean up your phone with o/s & app baggage left around. I perform the Factory Reset where you power off, press/hold the volume down & power button, when LG logo appears, quickly release and press/hold power button till the screen appears that says Factory Reset. Good luck.

Absolutely. After that last near disaster I've been very wary of updates. What does clearing the cache do? Now I've never ever backed up a phone for anything and I started to just let it roll without one but I thought I had better ask first. You're saying don't do one but KeepItReal below says ALWAYS do one. That's where I'm getting confused at.

Opinions and practices vary. Without the slightest doubt, I would say follow Keep's recommendation. It's playing it much safer.

As an afterthought, all my phones - Android, WP, and iOS, are unlocked, UK. I wonder whether devices are more likely to give trouble following system updates if they contain carrier software?

The only thing I have on my phone other than contacts and apps are some videos and a very few pictures. I don't keep music, data, etc. on there. The videos are already pulled off onto my laptop but copies of them still remain on the phone. So once I choose Settings, Backup & Reset, that should probably be good enough?

Now on the factory reset, it's Power + Volume down, once the LG logo appears release both and press Power, or just release volume down and keep pressing Power?

How are things now? Here are the instructions for the hard reset method I prefer to use (all phone's have this 'alternate' type of hard reset, just different button combos)

To perform a master reset using the hardware keys, follow these steps:

Back up all data on the internal memory.Turn off the device.Press and hold the Power and Volume down keys on the back of the device. When the LG logo appears, release and then re-hold the Power key while continuing to hold the Volume down key.

I haven't summoned up the courage to try it yet. I almost did Saturday night but then chickened out.

I just found out that because I'm on Verizon's Edge plan I can trade in this phone on a new one. Maybe a LG G4. I might do this instead of fooling with the backup & reset stuff since the new one will be on Lollipop anyway.

Or the new LG V10? I keep phone's for while. The G3 is more than enough power for me. Would love better battery life, but love this screen. Friends have Samsung's and Motorola's....most get screen burn in. Not the LG's! ! Plus this form factor size is almost perfect; I don't need bigger. Thinner, with octo-cpu would be nice, but not 5.7 inches worth! So preserving this with a Factory Reset from time to time is well worth the small price to pay. This by far, had been my most pleasant phone over my varied Android life. It does not get me agitated at all....lol. And I can be a grumpy old agitated man!

I agree. This LG G3 phone is plenty big enough for me even though my eyes are beginning to fail me a little so it does get hard to read the screen occasionally. I would like to keep it until at least next May or so to see what new things come out. But I just can't pull the trigger and try this backup and reset deal. With my luck I'm going to somehow make it useless and then it's going to get smashed up against a concrete wall or something.

And just an FYI the lg g3 can be rolled back to its first version when it was released. I know this because I had to unroot and send it back to Verizon. Max Lee on YouTube has a great video on the procedure!! It's called "how to restore lg g3 back to stock". Super easy and worked awesome.. When the g3 got lollipop I had issues receiving notifications on wifi. That phone is a BEAST on kitkat. I miss mine occasionally.

Sorry for the ramble!! It's early!!

No problem, ramble on :)

The more I think about it I've almost decided just to go ahead and trade it in on a LG G4 while it's still available. It's not going to cost me anymore than what I'm paying now. I know the LG V10 is something that I DO NOT WANT so if that's the direction LG is headed in then I need to get a LG G4 while I still can and then hope that I don't run into problems with it after a year or so like I have with my last two phones.

So how do you like the LG4 compared to the Lg3...we know the camera is a lot better on the Lg4, but how about the rest?

I have both. Apart from the camera, the most noticeable difference for me is that the G4 has richer display colours, and no trace of the sharpening artefacts visible on the G3. Despite those differences, or perhaps because of them, I like both displays about equally.

I decided to do an update and now it has caused my phone to reboot endlessly haha. just did a factory reset and downloading the new software update now.
