Alternate Routes in Google Maps

Ok, I'd like this question answered from two perspectives since I'm on the Eris and still running 1.5:

* Is it possible with 1.5 and if so, how? and
* Is it possible with 2.1?

I frequently drive down from SC to south Georgia and/or North Florida, but like to take alternate routes to bypass Atlanta. I'll do the same with other routes sometimes as well. How do I customize or modify my route in Google Maps so that it will do this? I downloaded the My Maps app but that didn't seem to do the trick.
