Always on display, not always on

When I first got my note 8, the AOD was already on out of the box and worked properly. I didn't see a use for it at the time, so I turned it off.
3 weeks later, I turned it back on. Now it turns off after a couple minutes.
I have heard of other Samsung models having issues with this due to different screen protector types causing an issue with one of the sensors.
I am not using a screen protector and am using the Alcantara case. My "show always" setting is on too.
Any ideas?
