AOD is to keep you from turning on the device to check notifications and have information at a glance. On a screen this large and where notifications aren't exactly your primary concern (this is, after all, not a phone), AOD just means more drain on an already power-hungry display. For the scenario you are using it in, however, I do see how it would be great. And that's where the 'screensaver' feature comes in, but I wish it was more feature-rich. I mean, no night clock? or always-on music album art? I'm guessing they're also concerned with screen burn-in, so whatever you use make sure that it moves around the screen.
