One thing that I'm not a fan of is the always on display. I'm coming from the Nexus 5x and that display shows the time and notifications when you pick up the phone so you don't need to unlock it to see there's a notification. I don't want the"always on display" to literally be always on but I miss being able to see notifications without unlocking the phone. Am I missing something or will I need the always on display in order to get what I want?

Welcome to Android.central.com

 Apparently the AoD=Always On Display app only show

notifications. If the user setup a Password to the Lock screen

I read that in the "USA-Samsung forum" Wait for more replies

I had actually forgotten about the always on display the first couple days with the phone....I've since turned it on. The good new is, any effect on the battery life has been negligible. Just out of curiosity, why wouldn't you want it "always on"?

I wish I could see notifications from the AOD. I don't want to power on the phone to see that I have a text message.

If there is a way......please let me know.

I've been using it since I asked this. It's just different than what I was used to. Also doesn't really seem necessary to be always on. As long as it doesn't have much effect on battery I guess it's ok.

Yeah, I got used to this feature on the Driod Turbo. It was nice to have....some will argue it actually saves battery life because it reduces the number of time you actually turn the screen on.

You do see notifications in the AOD....you won't see the text of a message, but you will see the text message icon.

I use Textra and I am not seeing any notifications on the AOD screen. Just the date, time, battery and battery percentage.

I use Textra as well and mine does show on the AOD screen, so my guess it's a setting you need to enable. Make sure you have turned off notifications on the messaging app that came on the phone.

I also see a text notification on the AOD with Textra too. It's just an icon at the top. Are you expecting to see a preview of the text like on the lock screen?

No. When the AOD is on I would like to see the notification icon that I have a text message waiting. Not sure if I am missing a setting or something.

I also came from a Nexus 5X. I liked how that worked, but I am liking the AOD quite a bit now. I can see all sorts of icon notifications by default, so I imagine many of you have messed with settings before actually seeing it work normally?

I can see icons from twitter, email, voice mail, google feeds and various other things. Basically repeating the same stuff on the regular notification bar. Battery life blows away the N5x so far, so I really see no tangible draw back to having it on.

When AOD is active up at the top you see the battery percentage? When you have an email or text there's no icon there? I just checked and don't see any way to change what appears. You're positive you have a text notification when you're saying it's not showing up on the AOD?

I went into the Verizon store and asked and we went through a lot of different settings. We finally figured it out. I wish I could remember exactly what he did but I don't. I remember that it has to do with what you allow on your lock screen.

Now on my AOD I get all of my notifications of Text messages, emails, calendar, ETC

Glad you figured it out. How are you enjoying they phone overall?

Overall....good. I'm definitely happy with it but I'm not like.....OMG about it either.
I've had the V10 and V20 and really liked the size of both. The V30 is taking some getting used to.

How about you?

I'm coming from the Nexus 5x so to me it's a big step forward hardware wise. Software takes getting used to but I like it so far. I'm only have a strange issue with receiving texts just from my Dad only when the Android messages app is the default app. Other than that it looks great, sounds great and is nice to use.

I wish I could help you but I use Textra as my texting app.
