Am I crazy or is the Nexus 6 camera not very good?

Holy crop, I never even noticed the default app doesn't have image stab!!?? WTF? Isn't that a requirement now??

I may have been a little unclear there. What I meant was, the N6 picks its own shutter speed and uses image stabilization at its own discretion to obtain a slightly slower shutter speed, but it is frequently not a satisfactory decision made by a computer with no sense of the actual requirements of the scene. No camera would choose 1/4 sec. itself, but if I can use that to get a sharp photo with low ISO, as opposed to 1/30 sec. with blotchy high-ISO noise, I'd prefer to go that route.

Mine have generally been pretty good, although I tend to have very low expectations for any phone camera anyway.

The Nexus 6 camera is strictly an automatic point and shoot. I would also like to see real photographic controls. That's why I carry a Sony RX100 Mark III in my pocket wherever I go.

For the moment. The popularity of photography apps combined with the opening up of manual controls in the api means that will change.

Does it mean it will ever replace my Micro Four Thirds camera? Nope!

The couple pictures I have been taking come out pretty grainy. I understand it's a camera-phone and not a DSLR... but my Galaxy S3 took better pictures than I have so far. I have been reading how the camera is supposed to be really good (not the best mind you) but I would expect it should be better than my GS3?? Am I out in left field here? Or is it the Google camera app that sucks and I need a different camera app? The pictures just come out noisy and grainy.

Thanks!

I agree!!! The camera is awful and my pics are grainy! I just downloaded another camera app BC nothing else worked.

Are you talking about low light pictures? or pictures taken outdoors in daytime?

Low light pictures are not a strong point for the N6 camera - they do get grainy. But in decent lighting, the N6 camera takes really good pictures (not over saturated like other phones)

My issue with the Nexus 6 was never photo quality, but how long it took for the camera to open & respond. I also had times where it locked up completely & crashed the phone.

Yeah... In good lighting, the 6 did well. Not great, well. In darker conditions, it struggled. It's like they purposefully underexpose... Maybe the sensor had too much noise, so they opted to just have it take dark pics rather than noisy ones.

Make sure you exclude the camera app from battery optimization that helped me.
