i have to agree with RBasil on the keyboard thing..its AWFUL!!! how do i get the HTC Keyboard by rooting??? any other keyboards that i can try? i think eventually i will get used to the stock keyboard but damn its just not that good lol

i've tried the htc keyboard (no rooting required) but it still lacks the accuracy of the iphone. i saw someone say you can calibrate it... how do you do that?

The APKInstaller (or APK Manager) which are required to install the HTC keyboard keep FCing on my N1. No luck. Thanks for the suggestion though!

I actually got used to the keyboard fairly quickly. I do agree with the comment regarding the screen. I was done with the iphone about a year ago when I attempted to listen to Pandora and surf the web. Then when I attempted to find a way to set a background. All of which led me to Jailbreak, giving solutions that felt half baked. In the end, my conclusion was an iphone was nothing but a good app launcher. If that's what's you want cool, but some of us prefer the option to personalize our phones, and the iphone just isn't for that. So I moved to a Pre, then to the Nexus One. I say this to say that for every glaring con you can come up with regarding the Nexus, you can find similar glaring cons with the iphone, so I don't really see the point of being so upset. You should be happy that you verified the iphone is the phone for "YOU".
Ditto. I keep getting force close. I downloaded the clicker.apk and the calibration worked, but they keyboard won't come up anywhere.

I thought it was me, but yeah, this phone gets dirty quick. The crazy thing is that I'm obsessed with keeping my hands clean and washing them all the time. Now it seems I have to get up to clean my screen more than my hands.
Screen is the sun isn't a problem for me & I don't see it being one as I'm usually shaded.
Keyboard is not only inaccurate, but it goes crazy! pnd4pnd mentioned this and thought it might have just been me. I still think it's something up with the device.

And I've seen the opposite. You're the first person with an iPhone I know regretting getting the Nexus. Actually you're the first person period. Yeah, everyone has their issues. But the Nexus One's positives completely outweigh the iPhone's. I typed faster on the iPhone and made fewer mistakes. But with tactile feedback on the Nexus and autocorrect not cancelling with the backspace key, typing just feels weird on the iPhone. The iPhone's resolution looks horrible and the colors look so washed out that I can barely look at the screen any more. The iPhone's notification system is a pain. Some of the apps are better, but Android has some apps you wont find on the iPhone. I have no problems with the N1 screen in the sun. The Facebook app is crap but I don't use Facebook often. The touchscreen is slightly less accurate but I barely notice. Non-Gmail email sucks balls on Android. I had to switch from yahoo to gmail to get push email. That kind of pissed me off. And I have a few more problems with Android but overall I prefer it over the iPhone. And I came from a 3G and then 3GS. Maybe I just got tired of the iPhone.

former Iphone 3gs user here and i feel your pain. Android is for geeks who love to play, fiddle, change and tweak everything all the time as well as clear caches and manage memory. Iphone is for people who just want it to work, work well, work fast and seamlessly.
The game and app graphics look very 1990's to me too, and my phone, which is a HERO, is slow and laggy and freezes a lot, even with all the fiddling. it bothers me Google and all the rest of the handset makers did not build on Iphones success and make the OS and phones better. i truly feel like i went backwards. moving from playing music to switching screens is painfully slow and buggy. I miss the seamless easy syncing of apps, music and photos, podcasts, movies etc...
Trying to make a modular system it seems, with different hardware specs and os levels and making apps plug n play is not really working out in my opinion. I cannot root my hero, apparently it has some software that most do not have, which keeps it from being rooted, but one should not have to root just to make a phone usable.
Like I said, great for easily board people who like to constantly change their hello kitty walls but i would rather have speed, power and multitasking.
i am stuck with the hero for now, paid for it myself, but my company uses my particular network and is paid for, so at least i get free service.

The version of Android your Hero runs is in the stone age compared to 2.0 and 2.1. It is ready for mass consumption NOW, and it shows.
I'm not sure I understand your first paragraph though. The OS is no more complicated than the iPhone's. (I had a 3G and 3GS prior to my N1, and the experience is similar). The user DOES have more options for customization, but that doesn't make it complicated and unintuitive. And what expense for upgrading? All upgrades for Android are free, unless your handset can't support the version of the OS.
What Droid 800 said. I agree, some types of customizing and tweaking can be complicated. However some are basic features any user should be able to customize, like wallpapers. Widgets are also easily customizable and another type of feature that all smart phones should be able to incorporate in some way. I found the iphone unpersonable for my taste, and as such found the Nexus One a much better fit.
Same for me. I got bored with it. And my 3GS had a new bootloader so I couldn't jailbreak it. Even if I stick with the stock look, I like having the OPTION at least of changing it if I want to. So far I'm liking Android because I don't feel like I'll ever get bored of it.

The OS is definitely more complicated than the iPhone's. Both may not be complicated to you, but it's definitely not that way to the majority.
All iPhone updates are free as well. Also, the OS is fragmented like Google and Android is. The original iPhone has 3.1.3 as an upgrade and has been out since June 2007! Even if the Hero is getting 2.1 (shortly... hopefully), why didn't it get the upgrade when everyone else got it? G1 was released over one year after the original iPhone... is there a 2.1 for it? will there be?
"All upgrades for Android are free, unless your handset can't support the version of the OS." << In essence, that is an oxymoron. You'd have to buy a newer device to get that OS. Therefore, it's not free. You are paying for an upgrade as you are paying for an upgraded device to get the newest OS. This is actually more expensive than charging a couple bucks for an upgrade.
No it isn't. Apple does the same thing with the iPhone. The 3G and 2G can't do video stock, so you would have to pony up in order to get the updated features. And even then, iPhone OS fragmentation is nothing compare to Android. While it may be missing a few features (the biggest one is video recording) the OS is still fundamentally the same and many of those features are not part of the core of the OS. You can't say the same thing about Android, in which major chunks of the updated OS would have to be stripped out to work on older hardware.
I've been stuck with Verizon wireless service for long time. Since we have family plan in Verizon, it's just impossible to move to different network.
Anyway, I was anti Apple for long time. When Iphone first came out, I was simply amazed. Apple totally win me over. since then I owned Itouch, and Ipod, however I would never buy one of their overpriced computer though. But I couldn't get the one that I really want, Iphone.
And then after long time, finally Google came out with Android and after more than 2 years, they finally put it on the hardware it can actually match the performance of Iphone. I was very excited and Google said it's going to be on Verizon.
Problem is, nobody that I know who owned Nexus One. Yes, I went to Verizon store and I played with Droid for awhile. but for my experience it wasn't smooth as Iphone. But Nexus One has faster CPU, I was hoping it will do much better but like I said I can't test it out myself. I have to rely on the forum like this.
So I am trying to read all the reviews as much as possible before it actually available on Verizon Wireless. But honestly, Google fanbois are worst ever. Everytime someone put some negative thing about Android, they get really offended. Well, I should say anything bad about Nexus One.
If you look at other Android phone review on any forum, they are much more honest about their phone, put pro and con. But if you go to Nexus One forum like this one, and you say anything bad about the phone, people start to scream.
So far, this is what I learned about this phone,
Android got future since it's from Google and tons of fans are out there to support, which is good thing if I get on board with it.
And it's very much customizable. But I am planning to buy one for me and my wife. I know that my wife won't like it because she doesn't care about the rooting or customizing. she just want something that works.
However, after almost 3 years of Iphone was introduced, Android is still far distance second.
Nexus One got multi touch issues. same thing here, if you dig up about people who bring this issue, everyone replied said I don't use that so it does matter. But you have to acknowledge the problem here and address HTC and Google to fix the problem instead of just hiding it.
Under sun screen issue, big problem.
Touch screen sensitivity.
I don't think I am going to order Nexus One after reading this review, probably I won't order HTC Incredible. To me some of the issues are hardware related and HTC makes it pretty but the quality isn't that great.
I want the phone that works. I don't want to get frustrated with it. Plus, I waited this long, I can wait few more months to see if Apple finally announce Iphone on Verizon wireless on June.

You realize how many apps I can buy in the App store for the those iPhones that allow me to record video?
And no video recording was not the biggest feature.
The biggest was actually push notifications, MMS & copy and paste. People had many options for video recording in the app store.
How is push, c&p & mms not part of the core of the OS? The messages app had to get rewritten. Every app in the OS had to be rewritten for c&p.
The point is that you can expect all devices to be on the same OS, whether it is missing features or not. I'm sure some of those features in 2.1 can be put on 1.5 with no issue. I have an android device and know mine has 2.1. There are so many more OSes that are on different devices, that becomes very confusing to the user. I couldn't even tell you aside from 2.1 what features it has over 2.0 and 1.5 (and all the others off hand).
Well, I rooted my N1. Wow, its so much better now.

+1 for root, 99% of my issues went away after rooting. I had all 3 iPhones, don't miss them one bit. *well one thing I do miss is the ease of integrating an iPhone with Mac/iTunes. DoubleTwist is great but I have a mental block with 3rd party apps. Prefer not to use them.
For iphone to nexus 1 converters: What were some solid areas of N1 that you enjoyed that much more than the iPhone?? Apps are apps, i know app store has more - but android will continue to catch up so this doesnt worry me....sucky facebook app is disappointing though.... I use google talk, picasa, and google voice daily - so this is the huge selling point for me, however i also use itunes daily - is nexus 1 media player that bad that i'll have to carry around 2 devices with me (one for phone and internet etc) and ipod for music?
I've installed the keyboard and calibration and the keyboard does seem better than the others I have tried. How do I run the calibration?
I just added a Clarivue anti-glare screen protector to my N1 and it makes a HUGE difference in the sunlight. Highly recommended!
