Am I the only one not in love with the camera?

My biggest issue is exposure. It is way too easy to mess up with this phone (if I use tap to focus I mess up the exposure 50% of the time).

I really wish Google would give us an exposure slider like the galaxy s6 and moto x have :-(

Also maybe I just don't get photography, but every camera app besides the stock app produces terrible photos. Not Nexus 6p specific, but just in general with Nexus phones I've never felt like I can get around this particular software limitation with 3rd party apps. I've tried manual camera (supposedly highly regarded) and a couple others but the actual picture quality is so much worse I just give up. Am I missing something or is this just the way it is?

Having given my S6 Active to my wife I can definitively say that the S6 takes better pictures and MUCH BETTER videos. Other than that I absolutely love the 6P, and overall I prefer it to my S6 despite the camera short-comings (or perhaps shorter-comings, since it's not "bad", just not as good).

That's pretty much why I'm still using my 6s Plus too. Kids. I don't take many pictures of landscapes and architecture. All of my pics and videos are of my 13 year old and my 3 year old. The 3 year old, as you can imagine, doesn't stand still for long. I need something that can snap a pic every time when I want. The 6P isn't that phone. And the video on this thing is incredible. The 6P doesn't match it there. The 6P has a great camera. At least a Nexus is finally in the talk with the big boys. But for me, I can't trust it when it comes to pictures and videos of my kids.

Agreed I love everything about this phone more than my iP6s+, but it can't capture motion of my kids at all. It's got to go back because that's important to me

My daily driver is an S6 but I'm trying out a 6P. I love everything about the 6P except for the picture quality, which is the only thing holding me back from keeping it. They seem a little washed out compared to the S6 pics.

Thoughts?
I don't think the pictures on the 6p are washed out but I totally understand where you're coming from.

My previous phone was a galaxy s6 and I think the problem is that the camera on that phone is just so amazing that other phones just can't live up to it.

I had to think hard before selling my s6 for the 6p and I decided that camera was important but not the most important thing in a phone for me. Overall I'm satisfied with the camera on my 6p but not nearly as satisfied as I would be if I hadn't had a s6. Samsung has really ruined it for a lot people. They've almost made it impossible for people to use a different phone after the s6 or note 5.

I haven't found the camera to be slow at all. Shutter lag is very minimal. Don't understand how you guys are having trouble capturing kid photos? A good camera app and a little photography knowledge fixes much of the issues people are having. I've been using Manual camera and like it a lot. Wanted to use Camera FV 5 but it never functioned on my phone. It's amazing to me that this phone has better low light capability than my first DSLR. Image quality is so subjective. Different manufacturers process images differently and they display differently on different kinds of screens. Going from a Moto X to a Lumia 1520 I was wowed by the camera difference. The move from 1520 to 6P feels like a lateral move. The camera is good enough that getting good pictures will be more up to me than the hardware much of the time.

The pictures of kids aren't necessarily the problem. It's the videos. They cannot compare to what you get on the 6s Plus.

That is true... The lack of hardware OIS is the cause there. If video is your top priority, this might not be the phone for you.

By the way, Google didn't leave out OIS to save money (the Nexus 5 had it, remember). The sensor used in both Nexus phones was never designed for mobile (it was for dedicated camera). OIS would have required a larger sensor housing... And they wanted to avoid making that visor any larger than it is.

I've found that most who complain about a tool haven't yet learned how to use it.

It's a cell phone camera, 99% of the users want to open the camera app and snap a photo. It's really not that complicated. The learning curve boils down to "where's the button to press to take a photo".

I honestly think the 6P has a fantastic camera. It's by far the best that a Nexus has ever seen. It just isn't the best for me. The 6s Plus isn't the best, either (I still think the S6, S6 edge, Note 5, S6 edge+ are better) - but the 6s Plus is better for me than the Nexus. And I hate using skins on a phone. Drives me insane. So iPhone it is. Updates and security due to my job are important. I can't wait for AT&T to approve of a security update.

Nexus phones get updates directly from Google and not through your phone carrier. That's a big part of the reason people get them. Galaxy series has really nice cameras for sure. Lack of video stabilization is a bummer to be sure.

I just upgraded from an S6 and received my Nexus 6p this passed Friday and I can tell you the S6 def takes better pictures, but the Nexus 6p camera is still pretty good. I like the speed of the S6 takes fast pictures I think it's due to the OIS, but who knows. Over all this is not a deal breaker for me as the Nexus 6p still takes decent pictures. Everything else about the nexus 6p owns the s6 especially the battery life which is the biggest plus for me. :)
