Ambient display

Re: ambient display

Having used both, Moto's implementation is better in my opinion.

When in my pocket, I turn the face of my phone away from my leg. No accidental opens, because my pants don't carry the electric charge to register touches.

I like to keep it on. I usually keep my phone mounted in my truck sonit helps me out.

Re: ambient display

has anyone used active display on a moto phone? is ambient display on N6 exactly the same? if not, is the moto version better?

No not the same. Moto x uses sensors and infrared on the front of it. The nexus 6 uses motion.

Re: ambient display

When I upgraded from the Nexus 4 to the Nexus 6, I was pretty bummed that there was no LED light. Now I prefer active display and was slightly disappointed that they put back an LED in the 6P. I know you don't have to use it, but I like the philosophy of active display.

Same here. On the phones that had an LED, I would usually disable it. To me, it was more of an annoyance than anything helpful. I really like Ambient Display, especially at night since it'll fire without lighting up the whole display.

Sure, you could start to add in some extra features... maybe a periodic re-fire if you have notifications I guess. But I don't have any issue with how it works in its current state.

Totally agree. It boggles my mind when people don't appreciate it. There is no better method that uses less battery to wake the phone to check notifications or time than Ambient display.

tap2wake = garbage

I too agree!

I really love the Ambient Display! It is actually one of my favorite features of the Nexus 6.

The flashing LED can be annoying, at times actually. At least with Ambient Display, when you get a notification, you know if it is an email, text message, missed phone call, voice mail, etc.

A flashing LED only lets you know that you have a notification.

Agreed. The notification light is helpful, but it also busts you out. Everyone knows you have a notification, lol. I really like ambient display so far. I think the moto x version is slightly better, but I'm not complaining.

Well I got mentioned in my other post, I just order from Amazon a quick charge 2.0 car charger from my car for when I'm GPSing. That'll help me out a lot.

You should be careful with that, using GPS & fast charge at the same time can make the phone very hot and rapidly degrade the battery - especially if it's in your windscreen and in direct sunlight.

If you have to do it have cool air flowing over the phone, preferably air conditioned.

I ruined my HTC One's battery from this.

The main issue with ambient display is that it keeps being activated in pocket by my leg.

I've switched it off because my notifications come through to my watch, otherwise I'd probably have to live with it.

That's odd... Ambient Display does check the proximity sensor before it fires, so it shouldn't fire in your pocket. You don't have a screen protector that covers it, do you?

I've had my phone go unlocked in my pocket a couple of times, but I suspect that what is happening is this 1) I pick up the phone and stuff it into my pocket quickly. AD has a bit of a delay, so as I am putting it into my pocket, AD pops on and something (leg, finger, etc) triggers my LS. Though, not sure how it unlocks, but stranger things have happened.

Sure, Moto's stuff does have more features... the IR sensors so you can wave over the screen, that's pretty slick. Once you get past that, and into Moto Display, functionaly speaking, they two aren't so different. Yes, Moto Display keeps you in that dark UI the whole time you are fussing with the notifications.... whereas in AD, as soon as you touch the screen, it dumps you into the lock screen, where you can dismiss, launch the notification, etc.

I used to use AcDisplay, which comes REALLY close to Moto Display (So much so that Motorola contacted the dev to change a few things), on my Nexus 5.. this was back in the KK days where it played nice with the lockscreen. and most custom ROMs also incorporated an "Active Display" mode... those worked great.

Unfortunately, 5.0 came with some LS overhauls to tighten down the lockscreen... which was a HUGE security hole in KK. So things like AcDisplay got handcuffed a bit. You can run it in 5 or 6, but you have to disable the lockscreen to do so.

Now I am getting nostalgic, I'll go check out AcD and see what its been up to. :)
