The main issue with ambient display is that it keeps being activated in pocket by my leg.
That's odd... Ambient Display does check the proximity sensor before it fires, so it shouldn't fire in your pocket. You don't have a screen protector that covers it, do you?
I've had my phone go unlocked in my pocket a couple of times, but I suspect that what is happening is this 1) I pick up the phone and stuff it into my pocket quickly. AD has a bit of a delay, so as I am putting it into my pocket, AD pops on and something (leg, finger, etc) triggers my LS. Though, not sure how it unlocks, but stranger things have happened.
Sure, Moto's stuff does have more features... the IR sensors so you can wave over the screen, that's pretty slick. Once you get past that, and into Moto Display, functionaly speaking, they two aren't so different. Yes, Moto Display keeps you in that dark UI the whole time you are fussing with the notifications.... whereas in AD, as soon as you touch the screen, it dumps you into the lock screen, where you can dismiss, launch the notification, etc.
I used to use AcDisplay, which comes REALLY close to Moto Display (So much so that Motorola contacted the dev to change a few things), on my Nexus 5.. this was back in the KK days where it played nice with the lockscreen. and most custom ROMs also incorporated an "Active Display" mode... those worked great.
Unfortunately, 5.0 came with some LS overhauls to tighten down the lockscreen... which was a HUGE security hole in KK. So things like AcDisplay got handcuffed a bit. You can run it in 5 or 6, but you have to disable the lockscreen to do so.
Now I am getting nostalgic, I'll go check out AcD and see what its been up to.
