Hacking is not illegal. Its society that made the word bad. Below is a definition of a hacker, if you're looking for the bad kind of hacker that uses malware the "black hat" is the correct term. Sorry I'm picking your post out, but I have been a hacker for many years and I never once done somthing malicous and I feel like I should crusade for the correct use of the term hacker.

Woah woah settle down! I did use the word "imply" in the original post but I didn't mean it as an accusation. ;) Although with the coverage of hacking iOS and the 90's blockbuster hit "Hackers" the general public might view what you do as legal grey area.

P.s. this a non serious joking reply.

:p I do get paid to hack though. One of the best aspects of my job.

Hack the planet!!!

Best movie ever! Watched it last night.

We should differentiate from those who has flashed 2.2 DK28 through Odin, with out rooting or installing ROMS.

I think most of the hesitancy of those who are still running 2.1 taking the DK28 plunge, is they may think that flashing an update is the same as rooting or hacking your phone.

It is NOT, in fact it is very similar to simple installing or side loading an app.

Poor choice of wording on my part - I meant the AndroidCentral community :)

Having a community of experienced users like we have here is what makes Android so successful. When I was a Linux novice i went to as many Linux forums as possible, read and searched posts & now I have friends coming to me for Linux help. My exposure to Linux gave me confidence to root my Pre was was more complicated than rooting Android Epic

The success of these communities depends on the interaction of it's users.
And having the hardware that is capable of customization makes it a great learning platform.

The more you read and experiment th emore you learn in tunr the more you can help others.

If you are new to rooting or Linux in general I suggest to become more familiar with Linux pick up or burn a live CD. I recommend Mandriva KDE 4.4.

Dive in & enjoy Linux.

Never actually rooted until I decided to do something other than stock (did try DK28 for a while, went back to DI18, recently back to DK28, and then -); decided to give Epic Rebirth a try (though, since I'm locked into LauncherPro Plus now, it doesn't seem too much different from stock DK28 ... maybe a bit smoother, and no problems with WiFi yet).

My only complaint about all this? Losing stuff like game statuses (360 elements in Alchemy takes a while to redo). Reinstalling apps from the Market/AppBrain doesn't bug me.

I use titanium backup for the apps which even include the market links. I use My Backup for my call log and sms restoring. I've given up worrying about games. Getting frustrated about having to build my car from scratch in NFS just got on my nerves to the point I stopped playing. Why that data can't be backed up is beyond me.

i personally have had too many issues with titanium. I use mybackup pro. I never have any issues and it does market links and data as well.

@kgbcapthowdy, your thread/poll seems to be a big hit! Hope your getting what you wanted from this.

and yes obviously a lot of people that do use these forums are more likely to to root/hack. I understand that. There a quite of a lot of people that dont use the internet for anything hardly and they dont know the full potential of these phones lol

I personally have *hacked* every phone I have ever owned... Man I can remember "hacking" my super old Nokia 8290 and Ericsson 768 back in the day to have have cool logos etc lol. I have never settled for just "default"..

I love hacking into my gadgets! In my opinion there's no better way to understand something than by digging into the guts of it and working your way out. I feel I have a much better understanding of the Android OS after rooting and installing a custom ROM. Plus, I'm a big proponent of taking matters into your own hands, so rather than wait for Samsung to get their act together and fix Eclair, I turned to one of the many devs who had already done so. My phone runs 100% better now and I'm not going back.

The idea never really occurred to me until I got my Storm1. Then it was out of necessity. But I do it now and love it.

Looking at the poll results, members that has done it all seem to be at a higher percentage.

I probaly wouldn't have rooted if the official froyo was released, but I got tired of asking my wife for her evo just to play flash lol. Now I'm a serial flasher(no, not the kind your thinking), I can't go a week without flashing a new rom. This is the way andriod was meant to be used. I show my wife all the cool stuff I can do, and she let me root her evo, more fun for me ;-). Thanks to all the devs, mods, advisers, etc for teaching me what andriod is all about.

btw: I'm score double what i was getting from stock on all benchmark tests!!!

On this website the number of "Power Users" outnumber the average user.

In a real world poll, it would be 9999 to 1 favoring the people who not only never rooted but didn't even know rooting existed, was possible or what difference it makes.

Another note being: 99% of Android Phone owners don't know anything about froyo 2.2 and if asked wouldn't be able to tell you what version of Android they have. Eclair??? Froyo??? Huh??
