An embarrassment of riches - too many tablets! Should I consolidate and get an iPad Air?

Why do you think the iPad 4th gen is better?

The other consideration is that if I sold all my other iPads and just kept the iPad 4th gen I wouldn't have an iPad with a cellular option. Inside Japan it doesn't matter because I can do tethering with my iPhone 5. But if I travel to the U.S. a cellular option might be convenient.

Sorry - I'm a bit out of it today. I meant sell all of your iPads and get the iPad Air.

My question is, what have you done to build up such good technology karma? I have given, and received some electronics over the years, but it has usually been to fill a gap. Things like when I received my first dvd player when a friend upgraded. I can't imagine a conversation that starts with, "I know you have 4 tablets, would you like another?" Surely the person upgrading must know someone without an iPad that could use one. If not, I know a few... :-)

Well, this is a very old friend I've known for almost 30 years here in Tokyo, and I help him a lot with his computer stuff, by going over to his house, helping him set up computers, helping him install apps, doing screen sharing with him to fix things on his computer, meeting him at electronic stores to help him choose the right things, etc.

Even though he's 94 years old he is very energetic and just loves always upgrading to the latest thing. He always says, "This will probably be my last purchase" and I just roll my eyes.

He upgrades his iPhones, and he upgraded to the iPad 4 earlier this year, but finds it too heavy for comfort, so wants the iPad Air. Plus he feels that getting the wi-fi version was a mistake, since doing tethering is a bit complicated for him.

Because I help him so much and never take money from him, he feels like he wants to do something nice for me, so it was his idea that I should upgrade too and we'd both have the same, nice, shiny new model (since he knows I'm a gadget freak too) if I took his old iPad 1 and more recent iPad 4 and then among all the stuff I sold I'd surely have enough to get the iPad Air. His other suggestion was that he would just buy me an iPad Air outright but I said I really didn't want him to buy two iPads, so this is what he wants to do. I feel a bit guilty about it, but I didn't say no. :)

That is the sort of thing I do too... I figured there was some story. :) Sharing skills and equipment is nice. I know about the sense of guilt too... in that aspect it is definitely easier to give than to receive.

I give away stuff too - like older Macs which I think have good use in them but are a waste to sell for just a couple of hundred dollars when I know a friend who might enjoy using them.

Oh my god he literally sounds like the best person ever. Can I have him?

My wife has the iPad Air, and it is very slick and light.

I have the Nexus 7 and also the iPad Air, it's a great setup. I'd personally sell your older iPads and get the Air. It's so much lighter, it really makes a big difference.

I personally do not like the iPad 4 or 3. If you want to stay with the bigger iPad I would sell all of the iPads and get an iPad Air. The difference between the size and weight of the iPad Air and previous generation iPads is quite big. The iPad Air is much easier to hold for hours on end, looks better with the thinner bezel, and the performance is stellar.

I`m like you, i have to many tablets, i have the LG G Pad, the iPad Mini with Retina, just ordered the Kindle Fire HDX, the Hi Sense 7 Pro, and only up until a few days ago had the 2013 Nexus 7, i`ve also had the iPad Air, i would recommend cashing in on your older hardware, i liked the iPad Air but the form factor was to big for me, i love the 8 inch tablets so i traded it out for the Mini with Retina which for me is the best iDevice i think they have released to date, i think its great being in both ecosystems, Android and Apple are different enough to warrant owning both, if you like the bigger screen you will love the iPad air, its so light and very fast, very impressive but i would also give thought to the Mini with Retina, as the real estate on the screen is still quite a lot more than your Nexus 7, its lighter than the Air, has the same screen and internals, they say the color gamut is of lower quality but my ageing eyes dont see it.

Bottom line is yes sell your older iStuff and update to either of the newest versions

Not that I figure this would happen, and I love Android, but DAMN, if someone gave me a free 4th Gen 64gb Ipad-I'D USE THE HELL OUT OF IT! So, feel free to make someone's Xmas? Seriously, I'd pay shipping from Japan. :)

I sold my original Mini and got a Retina Mini on Sunday. Best decision I have ever made! I love this thing. I haven't picked up my Nexus 7 since. I am seriously thinking of giving it to someone who doesn't have much in life. I had it listed on Craigslist for the past two months and have just got a few lowball offers. I would rather give it away for free to someone needy then someone on Craigslist.

Not sure how I will go about this but it would make a nice Christmas present.

It's good to see the generosity here!

Heh, I've been debating getting the Tab 3 from Sprint, but from what I understand the Nexus 7 is a bit better overall? Sign me up, I'd love some Xmas luck!

You should stack them up and be like I'm fabulous

Hope this helps!

Sell your old iPads and buy the new Air. The Air is a thing of beauty and the difference in weight is astronomical in comparison to the iPad 4.

I may seem to be overly exaggerating but my tablet (Xoom) weighs 1.7lbs without a case so an iPad Air really feels like "air" to me.

If I had this scenario I'd lighten the apple truck saving one that still had some vitality but has lost some of its street cred (pad2). Keeping this one mainly because I probably have some apps and content in the appleverse still. Having narrowed my tablet congestion I now patiently await that unannounced Nexus 10 living happily ever after in droidville.
