Android 10 Notification Sorting

This is one that has been bugging me for a bit, but never took the time to ask about.

Since upgrading to Android 10, notification sorting is kind of a mess. I will get a text message (Textra) and if I look at it immediately I see it at the top of my list. However, if I look at it a few minutes later, it has dropped way down on the list of notifications, some that are older.

For example, I received a text at 12:01 pm. I checked at 12:03 and this was my notification order:

  • Facebook group notification from yesterday
  • A medication reminder from 12:00 pm
  • A TickTick to-do item from 10:50 am
  • An email notification from 11:15 am
  • THEN my Textra message notifcation from 12:01 pm
  • Then a Today Weather notification from 8 am

I can get a message and see it at the top, then it drops down the list. Somehow if I don't clear it, Facebook always seems to remain at the top. Another example, I just got a calendar alert from Outlook and it immediately dropped down below the Facebook notification.

I know there used to be a Priority option in notifications, but that hasn't been there in a while so how is Facebook able to stay at the top of my list? I know I can change Facebook to be Silent and drop it down to the bottom, but I shouldn't have to do that. Plus even so, my message notification dropped below three other notifications that were from earlier time stamp.

I'm stumped so would appreciate if anyone has any ideas.

I couldn't find a priority setting in my Pixel, so at least it isn't a case where Samsung pulled the option. As for what to do...I'm not sure what to suggest.

General idea, what if the notification can be repeated? If it can, maybe that will refresh it to the top of the list?

For better or worse, it's good to see the Pixel doesn't have that option either. So the odd thing is that I have Textra set to repeat the notifications 3 times. However, as I watch it, it pops to the top on the repeat notification, but then gets bumped down again by other earlier reminders. It's the strangest thing. I'm going to reach out to Textra and see if they have any ideas why it does this.

It's not just Textra, that's just the one that concerns me the most as I want my messages (or at least the latest notifications) at the top.

Not sure if this is it but, on my Note 9, I went to "Settings" > "Notifications" > scroll all the way to the bottom 'til you see this screen: If you tap "Most Recent" (or whatever is in that Menu Window)...

...then you'll see this choice (not really a menu but):

I think MAYBE? those choices may give you what you're looking for... I didn't mess with mine but you can see what yours does if you'd like and see if it helps your issue! You've got "Most Recent", Most Frequent", Blocked" and "All" notifications, to choose from! Sounds right to me!!!

it happens because of "priority notifications"
Swipe a notification to the right/left just a little until you can tap the gear, then check whether or not there priority.

Maybe I'm missing something but there is no "priority" anymore. I wish it was still that way, as I had Textra set as Priority back then. For example, I swipe right on my textra message, click the gear and I see this

Then if I click on a specific name for that notification (similar under Default):

However, I do believe I figured out my particular issue. I have an app called Notification Reminder, which reminds me every 5 minutes about calendar alerts on my Outlook (so I won't miss work meetings). You can set it for any app and set specific times to remind you, specific ringtones, etc., which works better for me than the default Samsung notification reminder. But you have to enable it in special access for Notification access. I was trying to think of what had changed beyond the Android 10 upgrade and thought about this app. I disabled it under the Special Access/Notification access and immediately my notifications were showing in the correct order with most recent ones at top. Not sure why this app would interfere with all of them, especially since there were NO outlook notifications. But it seems to have fixed my problem, so I'm reaching out to the developer of that app and leaving the special access turned off for now.

What's worse, missing an important work meeting or missing a key text from my wife???!?

Do you have reminders enable in accessibility and it should be in app drawer?20200523_175443.jpegScreenshot_20200523-175116_Accessibility.jpeg

No, that one is turned off. I don't like that one as much as it's not customizable (time, ringtone, etc.). That's why I was using the other app as it allowed me to customize how often (every 5 minutes), how many times (3 reminders, 4 reminders, etc.), lets me choose the ringtone so I can set it to be exactly the same as the Outlook calendar ringtone and other customization. It worked great as Outlook just puts a reminder in notification but doesn't have a pop-up like the Samsung calendar that you must see/dismiss. So it's much easier for me to miss. I used to use an app called Calendar Event Reminder, but it doesn't read the Outlook calendar (my work recently moved to Outlook).

I've sent a note over to the developer of Notification Reminder, will see if they respond. In the meantime, will play with a few settings in the app to see if it makes a difference or look for an alternative.

Hey, Justafew. Not sure if you have solved the issue of not but I discovered your post searching the same problem myself. Thankfully I was able to achieve what I wanted by doing two things to the notifications that I feel are important.

1. Set them as important
2. Pop up screen should be checked for notification that you want to prioritise. For example of you want screenshot notification before downloads and both are important mark the screenshot as pop up.

Additionally you can also use firebox pro app on Android to get all notification in one place even if you dismissed. It shows the notification sorted by time.

Ok sounds good

This was back last year on Android 10 on my old Note 9, but my problem was related to using the Notification Reminder app. Somehow it was screwing up the sort order and once I turned it off, my issue no longer existed. So I just stopped using that app.

Shortly after Microsoft made a change to Outlook, allowing the sharing of calendar events with the Google calendar, so all my outlook events now appear in Google Calendar. With Google Calendar, I use a different app to remind me, which works beautifully with Google Calendar, called Events Notifier for Calendar by RYO Software. it has a very nice fullscreen pop-up for calendar events that you can snooze choosing set time (3, 5, 10, 15 minutes, etc) or choose a custom reminder time. Works flawlessly and has great dev support.

So I haven't had this issue since I stopped using that Notification Reminder app (by the way, that dev never got back to me with a solution anyway).
