I just spent several days trying to setup all my data & apps in Marshmallow. I thought I could tough it out & learn to adjust to the curve. But today I pulled the plug completely & returned to CyanogenMod 11, 4.4.4 KitKat OS & its ever crashing in call user interface.
The final straw that broke the camels back happened today. I couldn't get any apps I tried to open up reliably every PDF file I put back on my SD Card. (Google PDF Viewer, PDF Reader, PDF Reader Pro, FBReader with PDF Plugin, etc. were all struggling though everything else after a fresh install appeared to be functioning as desired - excluding the SD card situation of course.) Some crashed the phone while attempting to open a file, some left data blank, & others contained parts with no form of readable English text.
As soon as I deleted the Marshmallow Rom Slot & reinstalled a Rom Slot with KitKat 4.4.4 on it, the same PDF apps worked great - as well as some new ones I found.
(I know many say the external SD Card restrictions began in KitKat, but I never ran into any known restrictions with my rooted CyanogenMod 11 & Droid 4 combo of any significance.)
I can say that via SafeStrap 3.75 I was able to USB mount the internal & external storage in my Droid 4 to my PC. At that point I was able to right click the external drive & format it to exFAT so it now accepts files larger than 4GB. The formatting process lets you label the drive as well so it has a label of your choosing when USB connected to a PC. The hope was that I'd be able to re-transfer the 19GB of data back to my micro SD Card in my phone. Unfortunately I did not verify the files that I backed up while Marshmallow & WiFiDroid were installed pre formatting the SD Card to internal storage. (.zip file backup was corrupted & upon formatting the SD Card to internal storage, all that data neatly organized on it was lost. This could have been operator error, or just a sloppy OS & App partnership. Either way, let the next year of compiling & organizing desired data begin again. Lesson learned. When testing new OS / app partnership, verify all backups open before deleting the folders!)
Good luck to the rest of you Marshmallow trailblazers. I've put in my 40 + hours of torture & testing & I'm walking away from this OS for 6 months. I've reached my frustration & mental exertion limit on this one for now. I may revisit the subject for any signs of progress, but there is no way I'm going to deal with this on my devices on a daily basis. Makes a guy wonder if he can root & downgrade newer devices to KitKat where there are at least known solutions a guy can work with for SD card tasks.
