Android 8.1 and Camera HDR+ Enhanced

It would appear that setting is not only available in the preview, but it is also available in the release.

I downloaded and installed 8.1 OTA yesterday. Having read the same article you quoted, I turned on Camera HAL HDR+. BTW, what does HAL stand for?

Yes it's in the current 8.1 OTA public release....I'm only guessing but I'm thinking they borrowed HAL from 2001 Space Oddysey.

Hardware abstraction layer, other than that I can't tell you what it does??

Thanks! I remember some trivia about the movie 2001. The computer's name in the movie was HAL. And the most remembered quote from the movie was "Open the pod bay door, HAL!", and the computer responded "I can't do that Dave!". The trivia was that if you increment each of the letters of "HAL" by one letter, you get "IBM". ;-)

HAL provides a way for software developers to use and interface with system hardware without having to make device-specific, low-level system calls.

This will allow third-party camera apps to make use of the Pixel 2's Visual Core.

In 2001: A Space Odyssey, HAL stood for Heuristics ALgorithm.

In modern computer architecture, HAL is the Hardware Abstraction Layer. An oversimplification is that it is basically a layer of middleware that translates and provides access between the kernal of the operating system and the vendor hardware.
