I am finding the daytime display of Google Maps on Android Auto really washed out - very little color or contrast to the map and street names are not all that legible from the driver's seat.

That has not been my experience with a Kenwood DDX9702. The maps read really well at day and at night (although I had to do some wrangling to figure out how to make it dim enough at night). What car / head unit are you using?

I'm using the Pioneer 8100NEX and Maps on the phone is downright colorful compared to Android Auto. Maybe I need to play with the color/contrast settings on the head unit...I will give that a try.

And, now I'm back to start/stopping playback at intervals of 10seconds to 2 minutes for all things audio.

And thanks to whoever mentioned typing in a street name when voice dictation wouldn't cut. I sniffed around in the menus but never noticed that the maps has a keyboard entry form next to the mic button...a bit of a 'duh-huh' moment for me.

After Marshmallow update on my phone, the maps screen will freeze after about 5 mins. If I tap the maps button from the menu it starts working again, If I am navigating, navigation (voice) continues to work even though main display is frozen.

@ Jake Kohl - Here is what I figured since I had a similar problem with weird addresses. Bring up Google Maps on AA. Stop the car, you will notice a rectangle next to the the mic button in the upper right. Tap on it and then you can type in the address. Another way is to go back to your phone, hit the menu button and you will get the stack of apps, find Google maps and start it there and then continue on AA.

Here is my big Bug: I get the message on black screen saying "Android Auto cannot connect right now. Check your phone when it is safe to do so." Drives me BSC!!!!
Here is my fix: on my phone, hit the menu button and then swipe down on notifications. Find the USB connection alert saying you are connected to a USB accessory and change the setting to MTP and it boots right up.

My setup is a Verizon Galaxy S6 with Pioneer AVIC-8100 NEX.

Does anyone else get this? I have to do it at least 50% of the time! Not safe at all. It took me a long time to figure this out after trying about 7 different USB cords.

That's what I did eventually figure out. However, I can't start google maps while AA is enabled. Although I can move around in my apps, GMaps immediately minimizes if I try to start it while connected.

With regards to the "cannot connect right now", I haven't seen that - but I permanently connected my parking brake ground wire on my Kenwood when I installed it so it believes that we're sitting still all of the time and doesn't lock out the "in motion" stuff.

not sure if it's a bug, I do not get audible notifications for text, not sure if it's a bug or because I use Textra as opposed to the native Samsung sms app

To me it seems to be a device specific problem. I had the same volume problems using a Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime in my new 2016 Honda Accord (even after maximizing volume on the handset with all 4 sliders plus Google Maps settings), but when I upgraded the smartphone to an LG G4 recently and starting using this device with AA in the Honda, the volume problem went away.

I've installed the Kenwood 9902s. It was working with no issues until my phone updated to marshmallow. Now I'm unable to use any voice commands and maps will freeze when it starts to give voice directions. I can still take phone calls and listen to tunein or podcasts. Now I'm stuck with Android saying it's a Kenwood issue and Kenwood saying it's an Android issue. Extremely frustrating.

Buckle up folks, this is going to be a long one:

Let me start by saying I had next to no issues back in January using Android Auto with a Nexus 6P with my Kenwood DDX9702S head unit. My company changed me to an iPhone, which worked fine with CarPlay, but I was able to convince them to let me use an Android phone again. I picked up a Samsung Galaxy S6 Active a couple of weeks ago when that happened, and had issues where there was major (10+ seconds) lag when I'd touch the screen using Android Auto. Assuming the issue was phone related, I sold that phone and got a brand new Nexus 6P again this past Friday, knowing that phone worked back in January. All weekend long, I've had issues where Android Auto completely freezes up (navigation, audio playback in any app, touch), or even just disconnects. Even when it disconnects, the AA app is still running on my phone. Unplugging and replugging my phone back in fixes it for a few more minutes, but then it just happens again. This is making AA completely unusable for me, as it happens consistently within a few minutes. I've tried clearing AA's data/cache, uninstalling and reinstalling, and factory resetting my phone (should've been unnecessary given that the phone is only 4 days old), and factory resetting my head unit. The issues still persist. Until this is fixed, I'll just go back to using a dashboard dock for my phone, but given that I spent $700 on the head unit just for this functionality, I'm more than a little frustrated...

I use textra on a Samsung S5 and Kenwood 9902S - text alerts come through reliably. The only frustration is when I say "reply" and it gives me the definition of "reply" (the correct response is apparently limited to "respond").

Greeeaaaaat. So much for hoping Marshmallow was going to fix Android Auto.

Couple of things I've noticed. I have a Kenwood head unit that does car play and Android auto. Car play is much better. For one, it actually gives text notification, reads it to you, asks to respond and gives you physical buttons if the voice command isn't working. Android auto seems so unintuitive compared to Apple on that front. It literally does none of that. On car play I can be in a music app or using the player on the phone and it will overlay my navigation so I can change songs and not miss any directions. On Android auto if I go to change a song I can't see my navigation at all and have to constantly switch back and forth. Also, on car play I can still fully access the phone while connected. Again, not in Android auto! The phone is locked out. As of right now Android auto is like car play's special needs cousin. It needs a serious overhaul.

I have a Pioneer head unit that does both as well. Not sure what you're on about regarding text messaging.

AA gives notification of text regardless of which section you're in, will read it to you if you touch the notification and will allow voice response. It does this not only for standard SMS messaging but also Hangouts messages and WhatsApp messages which AC will not do. Voice command is available either by touching the mic icon on screen or long-pressing my voice command button on my steering wheel.

While on a section other than navigation, turn-by-turn direction notifications pop up on screen and touching them will put you back in Google Maps. Same for a change in music track.

As for touching your phone while driving the whole point of AA and AC is to plug your phone in and PUT IT AWAY so you can focus on why you're in the driver's seat. I think you've pointed out differences between AA and AC and we're all thankful for choices but can't say you've made a good case for one being better than the other.

The pop up directions often come too late to be considered safe. I like how car play overlays the directions the whole time. Wish it was an option at least. As far as messages go, I receive them and it will read them to me, but I have to check for them. I get no notification that a message was received. I prefer to have use of my phone if I so choose.

Hi Everyone,
I'am using a Nexus 6P with a Factory Seat Leon (Volkswagen) Radio / Head Unit.
Having the Problem that not all of my Contacts are Loading. the first couple time ist loaded all 400 Contacts, now only 50% (225/225 listed on the head unit)
and suddenly the Voice commands for apps tells me I have no account for that Person???

"Telegram Message Heike - No Account for Heike Found"
"Whatsapp an Heike - No Account for Heike Found"
Heike ist a Contakt saved on the Phone and till last week, this Voice command worked great.
I could even dictate the message and send it with voice commands.

Any got an Idea?

Tim
