I recently bought a new car and the only way to connect my phone to the car is via Android Auto. Even if all I'm doing is playing a podcast while I drive (with the phone's screen dark) my phone battery drains very quickly - I checked before I left this morning and my battery was at 64% when I left the house and 23% when I returned, about an hour later. That's crazy! Last week we took my car on a road trip and had to use nav (Waze) - not only did my battery drain very quickly but the phone also got super hot - to the point that I was really worried about damaging the battery. The battery drain continued even tho I had it plugged in to the car's USB port and I made sure nothing else was running in the background. Before buying this car and using Android Auto my battery would stay charged for 2 or even 3 days. My phone is Samsung Note9 and the OS is up to date. Help, please!

Welcome to Android Central! Are you putting your phone in a car mount on the dash? If so, that often leads to overheating since it's often in direct sunlight with poor ventilation, and heat can impact battery life. Adding on navigation will increase battery usage further.

Built in car USB ports are generally regular 5V2A charging ports. That makes it hard to charge a modern phone that is also doing other stuff. If this port is a dedicated AA only port, then it may only be putting out basic 500mA.

My Samsung A21 would seem to drain really fast whenever Android Auto connected. I think it had to do with the constant background navigation going on. On a long trip, even haven it plugged in for USB wired Android Auto and charging wouldn't really keep up for the drain. My newer Samsung phone is much better.
