Android Auto not working - but it used to

I purchased a 2017 LaCrosse about a month ago. One feature that I liked was the ability to connect Google Maps, Pandora, and other apps on the nav screen. My iPhone 4s was too old to connect to the "projection" option on the nav screen so I purchased a Samsung TracFone Samsung Galaxy Sky S320 4G LTE Android prepaid smartphone as a replacement. The OS is 6.01 "marshmallow" and sure enough, it connected right out of the box. But the phone had some other issues (wrong serial number, phone number didn't transfer, etc.). I resolved the phone issues with TracFone support and the phone now works fine for everything except projecting Android Auto onto the nav screen. When I tap projection on the nav screen an error message on the nav screen says "projection device not connected. To view this feature, connect supported device to USB." Things I've already tried:
• removed vehicle from "accepted cars" in the AA settings, then reconnected Buick Intellilink
• unpaired and re-paired my phone. Still no joy
• The car apparently recognizes the device, as "Bluetooth device connected Android Auto"
• Car connects and disconnects from AA as one would expect with messages to that effect on the nav screen
• during the setup process I've selected "Allow" on every option presented

I've gone through the options/preferences menus on the car and can't find a setting to change. How should I continue my troubleshooting on this?

Great suggestion and video. I was hoping that it would work. But it didn't. I'm at the point of trying to figure out whether it is my phone or my car that is the problem. I have all sorts of screen captures and photos of my Buick Intellilink screens but don't know where to turn for help.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Sorry it didn't help.:( I just realized that I forgot to move this thread to the Android Auto forum (the Android Apps forum is intended for developers to promote their apps.)

okay - that's where I am now. AA still not working. Details in the thread starter. Can anyone help?

Try a different USB cable. I found my car, Mercedes GLA, won't work reliably with my phone when using a short usb cable. Switch to longer 3ft or 6ft cable made a difference for me.

I know this is a few months old, but I am curious how this turned out. We have a similar issue with one of our phones and our 2017 Honda CRV. We have a Samsung J7V and an S5. The S5 works fine with AA, but the J7V will not connect regardless of the cords, the cache clearing, etc.

My Nexus 6 stopped connecting reliably to my Chevy Bolt display but the cable works fine on my old nexus 5. I can occasionally see an error message about apps not compatible over usb
