Is anyone using Android Auto? I'm looking at new cars and I'm limiting myself to cars with Android Auto. I have some a question, when running Google Maps on a car that also has built in nav in addition to Android Auto, does GPS use the car's GPS or the phones?

I would think it will use ur phone GPS since you are running Android auto and your car screen will be reflecting google maps from your phone.

Yes, it will use the phone GPS, and it seems to work really well. I use mine all the time.

Android Auto is seriously the best thing. I can't wait for my wife's Ford Escape to get the update to use it later this year.

I have it in my vehicle it uses the phones GPS. It really is a great once you use it you can never go back

Phone GPS. When I turn GPS off on my phone while connected to Android Auto, the Google Maps ceases to display and tells me that I need to turn it on.

That article says apps CAN use the vehicle's GPS. I don't see where it says Google Maps DOES use the car's GPS.

My stereo (Pioneer NEX4100) does not have GPS built in, but nav works great with Android Auto. Actually, the reason I purchased it as opposed to it's more expensive siblings that have GPS built in is that I knew I didn't need it since it would use the GPS in my phone.

Yeah I don't see that either. Android Auto "projects" what's on your phone to the screen on your car...that's it.

I don't know the answer to my original question however I did buy a Chevy Volt extended range EV with Android Auto and both are great. The car also has a built in nav system which I haven't used because Google Maps on Android Auto is so much better. Android Auto gives you Google Maps, streaming services like Pandora, iHeartRadio, Tunein Radio, your Google contact list so you can make phone calls and call up directions using Google's speech recognition. It doesn't respond to OK Google prompts, you have to touch the microphone icon on the screen but otherwise the speech recognition works as expected. Android Auto is only on a few cars at the moment, by next year it will be on most cars. I limited my car choice to cars with Android Auto so that limited me, my short list at the end was the Audi A4 and the 2017 Chevy Volt, I got the Volt.

BTW I have Android N on my 6P so I can attest that Android Auto works on N.
