Kinda like when you install windows and it can't find your video card driver so it fall back to a generic VGA driver without HW acceleration
Does android (not just the optiS) possess this ability?

I was just thinking because the "stack" nature of android if we could develop a kind of
"compatibility framework" that could possibly ease the incompatibility between devices
All Droids(pretty much) have a video chip, wifi, radio, wimax,Bluetooth, ect
Grant it this is far fetched I know

I figure why not ill just throw another crazy log on the fire.....:D

And just like in Linux, where a kernel upgrade or a video driver change are the only events that require a reboot...

I don't think a fallback video driver is something to bake in; it would take up more space than it's worth and you'd have to have a bootloader like GRUB classic to get the functionality at boot. How often do you change the video firmware anyway? If it ain't broke...

Well ok
I was thinking a universal kernel would be neat but I guess I wasn't really thinking about size limitations

Thanks

Is there no common ground between chipsets?
Alas a world in disorder,I weep, must their always be war between are family's oh what will become of our children?

No there is not. These devices are still, at the core, phones and not computers.
