I know we all love the open ecosystem of Android and everything about it, what I am wondering is, would Android still be the same if Google had gone the Apple route and controlled everything but still allow the open nature of the software. What I mean is Google release only Nexus devices and all software controlled by Google and we don't have to worry about the carriers for updates or is the variety of services what ultimately helped Android become what it is?

You can't control the software and be open at the same time.

Another post that makes it sound like people here want Google to be more like Apple and control all aspects Android software and hardware.

Android's variety is what helped Android become what it is.

For Google, the main goal of Android is to get people to use Google services on mobile.

No, not at all, I don't want Google to be like Apple. I like having options, what I was asking is would it have been different if they had gone that route?

Yes. Way fewer manufacturers and probably much smaller market share.

Probably wouldn't get new versions and features as fast, either, so the only people submitting code and bug fixes would be Google.
