Android Central Question

Using a not-rooted Moto G4 running Android 7.0. For some reason, several apps are stopped/closed without any prompt indicating the app has failed or needed to be shut down.

The phenomenon happens most frequently when using the Night Owl screen dimming app. This is the third screen dimmer I've used because I initially assumed the app was the issue. In this case, the app is switched on, I start using some other app with Night Out running in the background, and within a few minutes to sometimes, only 10 to 30 seconds, the screen goes back to its normal brightness and I have to go open the app and turn it on again. The app does have a setting that turns the app off if the device is shaken but this feature is not on.

In other cases, my podcasting app BeyondPod will be killed in a similar way though not as frequently or in such short intervals. Other apps include some games and any other audio app like Spotify or Amazon Music, sometimes Gmail or Amazon but rarely.

Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like your phone has only a small amount of RAM memory available for running apps.
When the foreground app needs more memory, android will kill one of the background apps to satisfy the resource request.

How much RAM does your Moto G4 have?
