Android messages, doesn't mute notifications anymore?

Since I've updated my Android messages app, I no longer have been able to mute notifications for some threads. Is this permanent or a way to get it back? If not, can anyone recommend a secure text messages app? Any help please.

How are you trying to mute notifications? Select the thread, tap Menu>People & Options>Notifications>Importance, and change it to Medium or Low. Is that what you've already tried?

I tried that and gave it some time, so far so good. thank you very much for your help. I didn't even find that when I searched. I always thought that was a general text settings. not for that particular chat. I was so use to just highlighting the chat and then hitting the no bell symbol..
