Android messaging with iMessage

My son has an Android and many of his friends have iPhones.

They say If they add the non iPhone users when they create the group chat in iMessage, they can all participate. But if they start the group chat and then try to add an Android user later on, it doesn't work.

Is that correct or is there a work around? Have you heard of anything like that before? It isn't always practical to ask his friends to switch to GroupMe, What's App or something else.

Thank you.

That is likely correct. If there is no non-iMessage user in the group chat initially it will start off using just the iMessage protocol and it can't be converted to allow a non-iOS member in. The chat would then have to be deleted and re-created or just a new one created, which then utilizes MMS for the group text.

While I like Apple for their computers (I use 3 Macs on a regular basis), I can't stand their mobile devices - a topic for a different discussion.
