Android newbie, what to do first after activating phone?

I'm setting aside my beloved Palm Pre in favor of an EVO 4G. Ordered from Sprint when EVO became available again today, it shipped this evening, and UPS tracking says that I'll have my phone today (a new today, considering it is now after Midnight).

I've not used an Android phone before, but I used a Palm Pre from shortly after the release date last year, and I used two different Palm Treos before that. So I'm confident I can follow the instructions, go through the tutorial, and presumably log into my google account so that my calendar and contacts will be synced into the new phone. I've seen the lists of must-have applications on the front page of the site, and will get some of those after establishing my app store account. I'll use the lists of battery-saving tricks at this site, the goodandevo site, and others to try to conserve my battery. I'll be shutting down 4G since it isn't available in my town yet. What else should I do immediately? Or possibly before doing the above?

I've seen claims that a hard reset is a good idea, it seems silly to do that immediately after activating the phone, but what better time, since I won't have any apps or anything to lose yet? What other suggestions/bright ideas/imperatives are there?

I have to drive to and from a town about 100 miles away tomorrow for a work meeting, but it will be an easy trip, knowing that my huge, bright shiney EVO will be waiting for me when I return!

UPS tracking shows that my package left Louisville at 5:04 AM, and arrived in my town at 6:15, still scheduled for delivery today, so I think UPS and Sprint will come through. Not bad for ordering yesterday after lunch!

Still interested in any stuff that should be on my to-do list after I've activated the phone and done the things mentioned in the OP.

Depending on how you use your phone, some things I did right away.

install handcent (messaging app)
install unread gmail (email app)
switched to the google calendar
play with the settings>> personalize
root with unrevoked
install free wireless tether
