Android OS battery drain

I have a Note 3 that's about a year old and has had excellent battery life. For the last 3 or 4 days something has been sucking it dry. The screen used to be the biggest battery hog, now it is Android OS at a whopping 60%. Something has changed, or something is stuck, or... ?
