A lot was made of Android 4.4 KitKat having a smaller file size than previous versions of Android. But for whatever reason I can find no mention of those actual file sizes, not even KitKat. Does anyone know the file size of each version of Android?

It's not how big the OS in term of size that determine its performance. Not how it work. As for KitKat, it's probably the biggest one so far. It depends on what you refer to, its different for each every devices. AOSP is going to be smallest, Google stock firmware is larger, bloatwares like TouchWiz and Sense are very large, LG firmwares are ginormous. But again, the size doesn't translate to performance.

Also if you use Android Runtime instead of Dalvik, the apps will be larger as well.

You can download a few stock Google images here: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images

Oh, I'm not asking about performance. I'm just curious. Does anyone know the sizes?

4.4 KitKat
4.1-4.3 Jelly Bean
4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
3.0 Honeycomb
2.3 Gingerbread
2.2 Froyo
