Re: "Android OS" suddenly draining battery aggressively
I purchased my droid turbo 2 about 1 month ago and was very happy with the new battery life-- I was easily getting through a full work day with wifi, GPS and normal use, and ending up with 75-80% remaining. "Display" tended to be the largest source of battery drain. Now I notice that "Android OS" is far and above the largest drain on the battery. In one instance, with the phone drained down to 20%, "Android OS" accounted for 37% of battery drain. What can I do to correct this and help preserve battery life?
If you haven't yet, you might want to read some threads about the apps that you can disable on the phone -- i.e., those installed by Verizon that you probably don't need or want, but could be eating resources on your phone anyway. Some people take this to an extreme -- I tend to be a bit more conservative and only disable the worst offenders, and those that I doubt I'll be using for anything. Some of the ones I have disabled:
- Amazon Kindle
- Amazon Appstore (no desire for this - only use Google app store)
- Audible
- Calendar (that's the Moto calendar -- I installed Google Calendar instead)
- Caller Name ID
- Cloud (Verizon)
- DT Ignite -- this might be the worst: it apparently can install other apps (e.g., games) without your knowledge or permission, at various times after you've started using the phone -- one of the first to disable
- Message+ -- not a particular problem, and some like it, but you should pick one SMS / messenger program, and disable the others
- NFL Mobile -- I don't need or want this app -- some need it -- to each his own
- Slacker Radio -- I use Google Play Music -- no need for this
- Support and Protection -- No need for Verizon and MacAfee's "protection" on my phone -- I lean on Google's security services
- Verizon Location Agent -- only needed if you have Support and Protection turned on
- VZ Navigator -- no need for this, since I use Google Maps / Nav
I typically have display brightness set at about 50%, I leave location services and GPS on all the time, WiFi is on all the time, Bluetooth remains on. I have Google News & Weather, the Guardian News App, Google+ and Flipboard all active and updating. I use GMail for personal email and one of my business accounts, and Nine for use with a corporate Exchange Server account - set for constant push notification. The combined email accounts are VERY heavily used, all day, every day.
I do NOT have Facebook or FB Messenger installed. If / when I go to facebook on my phone, it's via the mobile site.
With all this - I typically take the phone off the charger at about 6am. I handle a couple of hours of phone calls a day, dozens of emails, quite a bit of web searching, text and MMS messages, Google Maps / Nav, about 4 hours of screen on time - and by the time I plug the phone in at night around 11pm, I still typically have about 30% left, with the phone guessing that I can keep going till anywhere from 3pm to 6pm the next day, putting the full battery life at about 36 hours with perhaps 5.5 hours screen on time, extrapolated from my use in the prior 17 hours.
You also might want to try clearing your Cache partition. You can find simple instructions for this via Google search -- only takes a couple of minutes.
