Android Studio 3.0 gradle building takes forever

I was working on a very small project for college on Android studio 2.0. Yesterday, I opened the studio and it says SDK missing so I tried update/download which took hours and then it asked me to upgrade to studio 3.0 so I did. Now when I tried to start a new project on the studio 3.0, the gradle building is taking forever. It is been two days of me trying to get the studio working, please help! I have this really important project to make and submit soon
