Android System tanking my battery life! Time to return?

It's funny everyone complaining about their battery life lasting reportedly over one day. That's amazing battery life. My Nexus 5 has poor battery life compared to this!!!! Enjoy it!! Also regarding the Android system using high amounts of memory, some reports say this is due to KitKat. Camera not closing and running in the background. I personally can't wait for my S5.

I get about 5.5 to 7.5 hours with my S5, I think the Op is a moron complaining about only getting over 34 hours of use... without hypermiling the phone, I've never had a phone without an extended battery last more than 10-12 hours. go back to a dumb phone if you want more battery life. on my LG spectrum I bought a massive extended battery, never used bluetooth, kept the display brightness set at 0 24 hours a day, and had 1hr of screen on time all day and barely hit 18 hours without putting the phone in airplane mode over night. If I charged it up, then put in airplane mode and went to bed, it could go all day with almost no use, then airplane mode all night again and i'd wake up with 6-12% battery left. barely 36 hours on a 4800 - 5400 mAh battery with a 720p display.

I turned off location services, but battery life wasn't much better. When on, location services was using a lot of battery. With it off, apps were making location services requests that weren't being fulfilled. Either way, Android System was overshadowing Screen for battery use. This is not normal.

What I eventually did was go into location services and set it to power saving mode. Now apps get the info they need and it's obtained without draining the battery. Now I'm back to screen using the most battery.

However, screen isn't in the 70% range like I'm used to. It may be that the S5 screen is so efficient that it's moving closer to Android Services in battery consumption. It looks screwy to me when the screen is only taking 24% of the battery.

ok, so my battery is about done for...
7hrs 29 minutes from 100% to 22%
so 449 minutes for 78% battery
that gives 323 seconds (just under 5.4 minutes) per % of battery
so with 22% left I could have continued using the phone for almost 2 hours

that math gives me a 9.5 hour battery life, not too shabby in my opinion and if I didn't work at home would get me from the car to work all day, back into my car with a functional phone that needs to be plugged in to and from work.

4hrs and 29 min off screen on time
269 total minutes in 78% battery usage
206.92 seconds of screen on per 1% of battery
with 22% of battery left that gives 4552 seconds of remaining screen on time, or 75 mins 52 seconds

SO, my usage for today shows that I can get 9/5 hours of phone usage with 5hrs and 45 mins of screen on time, I took screenshots on my phone, I'll upload sometime later this weekend if anyone cares. I didn't install tapatalk on my S5 yet.

device is not rooted and I have only installed Lux, not configured it yet, and no other app that could be used to improve battery life.

Uninstall all your apps and test it out

Re: Android System tanking my battery life!

Solution: Turn off Google's Location Reporting.

Settings > Connections > Location > Google Location Reporting > Location Reporting: Off for this device

Didn't know about this. Thanks

Re: Android System tanking my battery life!

This happened to me on my S4 and briefly on my S5...I turned off GPS location setting and more importantly went through ALL of the Google apps and those that I loaded and individually setup background sync to limit them from constantly polling! Lowered System use and REALLY cut data use!

Cheers

where is this done? I've looked and can't seem to find a way. do you do it on the data usage page?

Re: Android System tanking my battery life!

Settings-Data usage-menu-restrict background data...then go to each app that you want to give data access and set sync schedule...mail, pod catcher, weather, and Dropbox. All others I sync manually on app open. You may have other apps that you want to sync on a schedule or constantly pushed like calender or social apps, it's up to you. Dropbox and my podcatcher are also limited to WiFi/charging so they sync only at night unless manually synced.

Cheers
