Android System Webview - Disabled?

All you have to do is go to the Play Store and find the Android system webview page. Now scroll to the bottom and there should be a box asking if you would like to be a beta tester. Click yes and after it signs you up you will be able to enable.

This is a system app but it is disabled and for the life of me I can't seem to enable it. Through the apps on the phone or through the play store. I have even gone so far as to reset the device, but no good. Seems it is an important app, but why is it disabled? What else can I try?

My work wifi requires a daily handshake agreement to abide by the code of conduct of the facility and when webview got disabled the terms of use page consistently timed out. I disable chrome on my phone which has fixed the problem there but google needs to push out an update that will work with my work wifi.

Could someone enable Android system webview. It wont let me do it.tried everything.

Have you read through this thread yet? Which phone do you have, and which version of Android is it running? If it's Nougat or above, Android System Webview is disabled because its function is covered by Chrome now.

Here is how i found a solution to the 'android webview system' disabled. Even using a 'package disabler / enaber program' didn't work.

If you want 'android webview system' enabled and working correctly.

You must ;

Install the latest Google Chrome, and an updated Google Play.

Once you do that. The 'android webview system' enable option will be open to update and turn on and off.

Thats what worked for me.

Ok i am not sure you guys know about this but this is intentional. Android N no longer uses webview but uses chrome now for rendering web in apps.

this is one of the feature google introduced in N to reduce battery by using 1 browser rather than maintaining webview and chrome at the same time.

so dont lose your sleep over it. check the article below

Google explains how Chrome will become WebView in Android 7.0

What if one was to disable chrome and or uninstall it using root?

Are you sure it's disabled? Perhaps it's enabled but the option to disable is not available. From what I gather, it's a system level app/service that allows webview to be used in certain instances throughout the device. For example, when you open up an app for the first time and are presented with an end user agreement to use that app/service.

I just noticed tht mine is disabled too,I can't figure out why....the enable button under apps for web. View is discolored where it's not even an option and in my developer options under advance has web. View once opened there is two options one is chrome and one is the web view but chrome is highlighted and will not let u switch apps I am looking for some replys as well if u can figure this out please let me know thnx

Welcome to Android Central! Which phone do you have, and which Android version is it running? From Nougat through Pie, Chrome acts as the default system webview, so Android System Webview is disabled.

Oh no, it is disabled, says so next to the app after selecting show system apps. The enable button is grayed out. can't do anything. Even in play store it shows disabled, but clicking on enable does nothing. Another factory reset in order? I hate doing that.

I have done the samething reset the phone, tried to find updates for both, and the enable is in grey so you can't enable it. Nothing works. I can't even get a Android update

Welcome to Android Central! Did you see my previous response to this thread? If you have a phone running Android 7 through 9, Android System Webview is disabled by default. What version of Android is yours running?

I have the android 9 but I have been trying to get the android 10 but I can't even update to the android 10

Which phone do you have? Chances are that there are no official Android version upgrades for that phone beyond 9. So Android System Webview will remain disabled by default, because Chrome is acting as the webview. Is there a reason why you want to enable Android System Webview?

If it's really important to you, I think you'd have to disable Chrome (which means you'd have to install a 3rd party browser).
