Is there any way to update the device with this factory image WITHOUT erasing all data? Just like an OTA update I mean. Thanks.

You can flash without erasing data but that would be VERY unwise when upgrading a major version like from v5 - v6. You'd be asking for problems IMO. Even with an OTA upgrade I would always do a factory reset afterwards with a major upgrade.

Just flashed! Make sure you download the latest ADB tools, or else you may not be able to flash correctly.

Updating mine now, currently looking at the new splash screen on repeat so I hope it's doing something! Just so it shows up in searches for other people that might came across a weird issue I had, I was stuck having unlocked the bootloader and rebooted ready to go, but just kept getting this weird error:

fastboot flash bootloader bootloader-hammerhead-hhz12k.img
target reported max download size of 1073741824 bytes
sending 'bootloader' (3120 KB)...
FAILED (data transfer failure (Unknown error))
finished. total time: 5.036s

Using a decent USB cable fixed the issue even though all the previous steps had worked with my normal cable.

I got it via WugFresh's Nexus Root Toolkit. I don't know...so far it seems a little laggy compared to 5.1.1

Whenever there is a major Android release, I flash the factory image and not use OTA. The performance on my N5 so far has been much better then 5.1.1 and the phone is much more responsive.

I came from windows phone. When there is an imminent OS update over on windows central, there were posts every minute asking if anyone has received it.
