I noticed the specs for the virtual devices, as setup in the AVD Manager that you can download from ADT and Android Studio are as follows.

The specs shown in the device list are:
- Android Wear Round; Screen: 1.7", 320x320, Small hdpi; RAM: 512MiB
- Android Wear Square; Screen: 1.7". 280x280, Small hdpi; RAM: 512MiB

For both, the details specs show:
- 1.65" not 1.7"
- GPS
- Accelerometer
- Gyroscope
- Proximity Sensor

If these specs are correct, the square devices will be significantly less sharp displays, but will likely be cheaper since square displays are cheaper to begin with and they are lower resolution.

Actually, the square device will be significantly sharper. It is have diagonal size of 1.7" and using the Pythagorean theorem, the diagonal pixel density will be 395 pixels. The round screen will be 1.7" in width, height and diagonal, and the diagonal pixel density will be 320 pixels.

That is if the square screen is 1.7" diagonal, which is the way they are normally measured. If that is 1.7" in width and height, then it will be lowers race as you mentioned.
