Another Connected Remotely Question

I have the BT version of the 42mm. Last week my phone and I were 12 miles from my GW. I looked at my watch and it said "connected remotely". I asked what this meant and it was explained to me. OK, got it. But...when my watch and phone are both in the house but at opposite ends of the house, they disconnect and I get a "standalone" icon on the watch. Why are they connected remotely when they're 12 miles apart but the watch is in standalone mode when they're 60 feet apart?

So did I ask a really obvious question or one that is so hard no one can answer?

Maybe the reason is this: How can you look at your watch being 12 miles from it?
"Last week my phone and I were 12 miles from my GW. I looked at my watch and it said "connected remotely"."
(I take it that GW=Galaxy Watch)

It will take some seconds to connect to the Wi-Fi or LTE/3G (depends on model)
