Another (soon-to-be) Nexus Expat with ?s about the Rezound

So I made the switch this evening - I'm cautiously optimistic about the early results. 4G signal is consistent in my house so far, which is more than I can say about the Nexus. I ran about a dozen speed tests and the results are consistently 50-100% better (7-12 mbps download vs. 3-6 on the Nexus). I did a little bit of config and then played YouTube videos (streaming flawlessly) to run the battery all the way down. The external speaker is definitely a lot nicer. I have not made any phone calls yet.

This is my first HTC phone and I actualy like Sense more than I expected. A lot of little touches that add polish. A few that I noticed off the bat:

  • Ability to store pictures to internal memory - with this and the "no review" settings, the camera is almost as rapid-fire as the Nexus
  • Unlock to 4 apps and Folders on desktop (the latter is not as nice looking as on ICS, but functional nonetheless)
  • Recently used apps in the notification bar (faster access than long-pressing Home)

My only complaint so far is that is that I have pink buttons :(. I would have requested another unit, but I snagged the last one in the store (and I had already visited another store that was out of stock). Not too big a deal as I'd like to config them to never light up anyway (anyone know how to access that setting?)

Another benefit to the Rezound I recently learned of while browsing this and other forums is the potential ability to register the device on another carrier's network by installing an applicable/local SIM card; with a few int'l business trips coming up this year, that will come in handy as a fringe benefit.

Are you saying a Rezound on a CDMA network will work on a GSM network outside the US?

Sources of that info, please? Thanks.

That's a first. Never have heard this before on Verizon. Don't grieve the resound to be a global phone

If you go on xda, there us multiple threads confirming that you can use it as a global phone.

Thank you! I will check XDA. Does the Rezound have to be rooted, though? I'm guessing yes, but hoping for a "no."

...how? It doesn't have a GSM radio.

EDIT: I stand corrected. It apparently does. I wonder if the rezound will get the update to enable it that the Spectrum will.

Also a former GN user here. Loving the Rezound. As a business traveller, I really hope somebody figures out the GSM issue and gets us access quickly.

Well, I decided to return my Nexus for all the same reasons. I've been bouncing back and forth between the Rezound and the Moto Razr Maxx. I understand that there are still some "buzzing/humming" issues with sound from the headphone jack on the Rezound?

Any body have any other advice to help me chose between the Rezound and the RMaxx? Or, wait for the next Tegra 3 HTC device? The Edge (or whatever VZW's version will be called)?

The sound issues are not a given, it's a sporadic experience, at it's worst. No one I know has experienced any sound disparities from using them. No one has returned a Rezound @ my nearest store for that reason, yet. So don't let that weigh to heavily in your considerations. I'll let others chime in on recommendations but it would not be a terrible idea to wait and see what HTC brings to MWC next month, if waiting is not an issue for you.

I have 3 rezounds, all 3 had the same buzzing /humming issue when music is playing in any app. Most of the time, it is not very noticeable, but when I turned the volume to zero, it is most certainly noticable but not super loud. Sounds more like electrical interference. I should also say that my ears are more sensitive to noise than most. I can hear the high pitched squeal coming from some chargers or electronics, i ask others around, they don't hear anything.

In a roundabout way, I know what you speak of. It is electrical interference that causes it. I haven't experienced it on my Rezound directly. Oddly, by coincidence, I experienced it when I had ny ear buds plugged in my TV. When my Rezound was placed near it and everytime since, w/in a few inches of the ear buds cord when plugged in, it occurs, even scrambles the cable tv a bit. There is definitely an issue at play w/ some Rezounds in that regard. Sure seems like it's LTE related, maybe the radio, or something akin to the spectrum it's using at the time of.

I went from Bionic to Rezound. VZ gave me the option to get the GNex but since it doesn't support microsd, I passed.

The VZW reps are really pushing the GNex. I went to the VZW store last night, and man...the rep just wouldn't shut up about the Nexus. lol. After spending 20 minutes with each phone for the 2nd time, I stuck with my gut instinct to walk out with the Rezound.

Funny story - a customer asked the VZW rep what "AMOLED" meant. She said she didn't know, but thought "that AMOLED is a brand name of the screen manufacturer." LOL. The customer corrected her (he was testing her). Oh my, why are some of these people selling phones? (She was really cute, though.) :)
