Another tablet UI?

Of everything announced today, the biggest thing that caught my eye was that it appears Google has decided to move away from the UI/UX first introduced on Honeycomb, or at the very least further muddy the waters by introducing a fragmented tablet UI. It was very odd to see what was essentially the phone version of Android on the N7, and seemed to hearken back to the bad old days of Gingerbread running on the original Galaxy Tab.

I've used the Galaxy Tab 2 7 inch running on the 'current' tablet UI, and it worked no better or worse than on much larger tablets, so I don't see a reason why it wouldn't be included on the N7 unless Google has made the decision to abandon it in some form. As a matter of fact, I thought that it worked BETTER on the smaller form factor because some of the irritating aspects of the OS (like the app drawer shortcut on the top corner) became more manageable.

Is this how the OS on tablets at 7 inches will look from now on? Is the separate tablet UI dead? The announcement left a lot more questions than answers in regards to the UI on the N7, and I have not yet seen anything that indicates why this specific UI was chosen and the ICS tablet UI wasn't. Can any of the AC staff shed some light on this?

I was on the fence about the Tab 2 and Nexus 7. It may have higher performance than the Tab, but the UI looks pretty bad. I'd take touchwiz over a phone UI on a 7 inch slate.

You realize ICS is essentially a phone UI on a tablet?? I actually like what google did with JB i mean even Duarte said it why have 2 different experiences on phone and tablet. That isn't the case with IOS and people do not complain about it being the same. It seems to work perfect on the nexus 7 plus I played with a tab 7.0 and that thing was so slow and clunky compared to the asus pad 300 with quad core processor. touchwiz seemed to really slow the tab down IMO.

I think the new UI layout works perfectly fine for the purposes of a 7 inch tablet. Given that this particular tablet was made to be held in portrait orientation, the current tablet UI would leave it cramped especially on the status bar.

There's a great interview on the verge with Matias Duarte that goes into depth for all their design decisions from the UI to the hardware of the N7. Makes sense to me the direction they want the Android tablet space to go.

Here's that interview btw

But that's the thing: the UI on the iPad IS different than the iphone . All of the conventions are the same, but the actual experience is different.

The only difference on the iPad is tablet specific apps, such as mail, you tube, etc. The actual home screen experience is dot for dot identical.

Home screen, yes, but the differences are far more numerous than 'tablet specific apps'.

Well there are drop down menus in certain apps etc, but i still feel that is tablet specific in terms of apps.
