Ok,,I have been reading on here and everywhere and am still totally lost on what to do. I have z4 root but I never changed roms or anything, only used it for wireless tether. I unrooted with the z4 and I am still getting update fail. From what I have read I need to sbf using rsd lite, correct? If so where is the correct sbf file I need to dl and flash to my x? Can someone please help me and put it in idiot terms please!!!!

I had the exact same issue and followed all the posts from Carlos in this thread http://forum.androidcentral.com/motorola-droid-x/89773-help-gingerbread-update-fails.html

It was a life saver for me. I was able to SBF back to Froyo and then the update went through the first time. Just follow the links and watch the Youtube video. On the link to the SBF file, the first few links to it do not work, but if you scroll down the page there is one that does. around 455mb or so for the file.

Good luck. I hope this works out for you like it did for me. I am loving Gingerbread and think I will just avoid root completely this time.

If you avoid root your giving up the ability to put custom roms (liberty ect) overclock/undervolt and just get your device the way YOU want it.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the root on Froyo so I could block the annoying programs from my app drawer (City ID) and download the occasional book to my nook. But I think I am going to leave it as stock gingerbread, because I never really new what I was doing with the overclocking, and had no idea on how to change the ROM. So I think I was one of the users who was dabbling in the root area when I shouldnt have been. For everyone like yourself who knows what they are doing, and have been a tremendous help to me with my minor issues, it is great.

You'll lose everything (more or less) but you can still download it again without charge (as long as you set up the same Google account). It's really not that bad, but Titanium Backup can help make things even easier by backing up your settings - if you're rooted.

If you want to retain root and move to gingerbread try this:
get droid2bootstrapper from market, get rom manager from market.
Get the method 2 (the 2file version part1 and part2) Official DX Gingerbread 2.3.3 (4.5.596) Release Thread - Something for everyone
No need to SBF if you have stock root Froyo
rename files so you can see part# near beginning of file.
Then run d2 boot strapper.
Click bootstrap recovery. After it says success click reboot recovery.
Once in boot loader...click install zip from sd. (use the volume to move up/down and camera to select) then click install from sd again.
Click on part 1. when finished click on part 2.
When done click on reboot phone. That should do it. Hope that helps.
