Anti virus

I never said there was...my only point was that you should never allow anti-virus apps to provide a false sense of security or preclude you from using safe practices and common sense. I agree with your statement, and it certainly was not my intent to "decry the value of AV programs", however I do feel that is it just an important for people to have a realistic understanding of the level of protection AV programs provide."

I think we're both saying and have said the same thing.

What I find scary though is that when professionals and experienced users talk about this issue, they do so with a nuanced perspective that non-professionals and novices do not understand. It can lead to the wrong conclusion. I've just run into too many people these days who have heard such comments out of context --oh, well, the anti virus doesn't really protect you anyway---and assume it's ok to forego it. It's definitely not ok.

Not that I'm accusing you of it, since your post was IN FACT nicely nuanced (thanks!), but I think professionals talking about the inadequacy of av programs too often need reminding that some may misinterpret what they're actually saying; balance is necessary on both sides of the issue.

I bought AVG pro while it was 30% off, so far I'm loving it. I feel like I don't have to worry what I install on my phone, if you want a peace of mind I suggest you install an anti virus, otherwise just be Very careful, more and more apps trying to sneak all kinds of crapware on their apps.

Compare TrustGo to AVG, Avast!, and Lookout.

My Verizon S4 has Verizon Mobile Security, which appears to be McAfee behind the scenes. Open that up to activate basic protection or go to an advanced version for a monthly fee.

I'll agree that's an interesting chart--but it's also coming from TrustGo. It wouldn't be the first time an advertiser found a way to spotlight their features while not mentioning things other people do better. ;)

And features are not the only issue. TrustGo is apparently all free. What's their research dept like? How fast do they roll out definition updates to make you less vulnerable to new exploits? Do they have the resources to monitor the net and roll out new definitions quickly? The old saying--you get what you pay for sometimes. I don't know what those answers are, but they are potentially far more important than an occasional frill.

Well, why don't you ask TrustGo themselves?

What do you expect them to say? "We're a broke *** company that makes no money and can't do the job properly, that's why it's free!"

Probably not going to say that, even if true.

I'd be willing to hear some of their PR, which might be able to adduce some facts apart from opinions, but I'd rather hear some independent reviews from professionals who actually are on top of it as to who catches what how fast. Per the discussion above, definitions and updates are a critical part of virus programs. It's not an area where you want to be penny wise, pound foolish. I want to be sure the company doing it is on top of it.
