antivirus app recommendation for the new nexus 7?

I'm getting a pop message (got twice) that a virus has infected muy Nexus 7 2013 with a link. Of course I just close it. Should I be worried?

Welcome to Android Central! That is almost certainly just a popup ad from your browser. You don't have a virus, so ignore the popup.

By far the best thing for security would be 1) rational permissions that align better with real world apps, and 2) some decent user accessible logfile that can be dumped just like with hijackthis. Wireshark is not a good solution for trying to sort out malicious network traffic.

I feel I need to get some antivirus protection on my new device. I am new to android and would like to know what you veterans recommend.

I use Kaspersky Mobile security for my Nexus 5 and 7 devices. Works well for me. But then again, I only download from the Google play services store. The main thing that I keep it for is its antitheft feature in case my gadgets are lost or stolen.

I see your reasons for no anti virus software but what about the risk of data being stolen / copied when doing on line banking on holiday?

I've had a couple iPads come into my shop recently with virus complaints. Both times it turned out to be adware in Safari. I cleared the cache for the browser, and it went away. I imagine similar would be true for Android devices, so if you're getting pop ups while browsing the web on your Nexus 7, try clearing the browser cache.
