Android Central Question

This started today - any app that has a map will crash when I run it. Uber, Run trackers, Trails, doesn't matter. If it shows a map it will crash on start. The only app that works is Google Maps.

If I revert Google Maps to stock version - it also crashes. If I update it to latest, then it works. I tried to delete cache, didn't help.

Samsung S8.

Help, I really don't want to factory reset.

Welcome to Android Central! Which cache did you clear? The Google Maps app cache, or the system cache partition as mustang7757 suggested?

I think they mean they uninstalled all updates for Google Maps to revert to the factory installed version.

This post title made me laugh.
Google maps is a mess.
I pretty much stay with the factory load as the updates make it worse and the bloatware is smothering.
Using a 3rd party map app is a joke because they still need google maps to run in the background; you get a different gooey interface is all. Plus an extra apk running on top of maps :(

I wouldn't say it's a mess. Works fine for me. Since it sounds like you tend to strip down your device a lot when it comes to Google services and other things, I wonder if that might cause some of the issues you encounter.

Maps is busy with useless clutter. Want a Garmin no bs map app. Unfortunately Google will eventually destroy any app because they keep trying to make them "better".
Maps was far better in 2006. Gmail in 2010.
It's sad. The word conservative doesn't exist at Google and their software suffers.
I don't let google or for that matter bixby muck it up and mine data in the background. Don't use voice commands, ever. When I drive, I drive, phone off, maps is the only exception and a poor one at that.

When I tried updating maps it was literally an accident waiting to happen. I want to enter the address or a point on the map and push one button with no suggestions, another button... blah, blah, blah
What a mess it is... poor design.

Add to that google is horrible with residual addresses especially newer ones. Garmin will list no address found while google "pretends" it's there. Where?
I know Google maps like a reoccurring nightmare.

I will also point out in areas of limited bandwidth/signal of which there are many here, Gmapps squanders data resources on useless junk. Result maps chokes and becomes unusable.
Perfect... so yeah I want it locked down!

I must be in a parallel universe. My experience is the opposite. Google maps has never been more problematic than Garmin.
Garmin, who sold me a Lifetime Maps GPS unit and then decided not to honor it.
Addressing your complaints 1 by 1 would take too long. You are missing some basic uses of Maps. You shouldn't be having the problems you describe, and it does some of the things you want but think you can't do.
Check out its features on their website.
Good luck

It's operating normally. More of a shopping tool.

Ha-ha do -you- know google maps?
Here let -me- show you one fix to my litany of Google fails.
"OK maps"

whatever...

Add Google Fit to the list. I tried to track a walk yesterday but Fit kept crashing. After clearing the app cache and removing and reinstalling the app I just left it to do the persistent tracking instead...

Have you updated your os? You state no issues with Maps on its own, and the S8 os has been updated since it was new/you got it. The apps depending on Maps have been updated. Could just be a configuration problem. What's your os and ui?

Well if Maps runs by it's self, at least you have what you need. Pretty much how I run maps on my 10+, lol.
XDA Developers might know a fix.
Sounds like a dependent app is messing up.

You can try a network reset and as mustang7747 mentioned clear the system cache on the boot menu.
Check settings. Reset maps and all associated apks to factory default and don't let them update.
See if that works, if so then let it update... doubt any of this will work. Don't think it's worth a hard reset though.
Hoping you ferret it out...

Yeah that probably fix it!
Problem is what if they don't want the next OS step up?
Especially on a carrier variant on an older model it can be a very bad trip. AT&T/Samsung are notorious for helping to make phones obsolete with OS "upgrades".
Been there, done that.
They bank there won't be enough consumer complaints to the FTC for it to act... and get away with it.

It's safe to say that one person's experience with any given app will not always be universal, so let's all be open to that, on all sides.:)
