Any chance of this getting Gingerbread?

I bet we get it before the end of the year...not from LG but from the ROM developers.

*DING* Another benefit to rooting;)

I don't want to speak for the two primary ROM developers here, but it is my understanding that ROMs for any phone are based off of the phone manufacturer's released version. LG has their 2.2 build, and while ROM cookers modify the heck out of it, adding and removing things and generally do things that normal guys like you and me can't do, it is still based off of what LG releases. To put Android 2.3 on this phone before LG releases their official 2.3 release would require more than cooking a ROM - it would require a build-from-source AOSP (Android Open Source Project) release similar to what CyanogenMod is.

For instance, my previous phone (Samsung Moment) was originally released with Android 1.5. ROM cookers did their best, but it wasn't until the middle of May when Samsung released 2.1 for the Moment that 2.1-based ROMs started coming out. When Froyo was released, Samsung announced that the Moment would not be getting it. Some ROM cookers were able to backport some features such as JIT from 2.2 in to their 2.1-based ROMs, but the Moment never got full-blown 2.2.

Anyway, I don't know ksmith, beezy, drellisdee, zefie, or any of the other active developers for this phone. Heck, they could very well be on their way to releasing 2.3 tomorrow for all I know. I'm just saying that without LG releasing 2.3, it could be a while if ever before this phone sees 2.3.

Hopefully LG (or the person doing their Facebook page, rather) is just mistaken and is going off of the old rumor that the OS required a 1ghz processor rather than outright lying about what appears to be their big phone right now (they seem to like talking about the Optimus line a lot).

If not, we'll probably get a "2.3" custom ROM; a lot of the features that users would notice are already in other ROMs.

However, if this is LG's stance on the issue and they won't upgrade a brand new phone that they're really pushing people to buy and saying the phone can't run it when the devs assure us it can run the new OS better than stock... then this will probably be the last LG product I will ever get. Probably will try to block out the LG logo on the front as well so that I'm not promoting their company :P

Im pretty sure a lot depends on having good kernel source. If I'm correct, Samsung doesn't/didn't completely open source the drivers. I'm not sure on what's the situation on the Optimus S but if the kernel source and drivers are completely there, you could probably piggy back on Cyanogen and port the 2.3 release. This is especially true since Froro and Gingerbread are pretty compatible. Keep in mind that CM releases are based off of AOSP and not any OEM release.

to answer the first part about your quote

[DEVS ONLY] Bootable Gingerbread build 4 [DEVS ONLY] - xda-developers yeah it's for evo but damn these guys are quick and with out a manufacturer releasing, there's even a tweet quoted on the first page saying some one's got a FULLY RUNNING PORT on their phone, with google apps, and everything, though it doesn't say for which phone.

as for the second, they haven't commented in here but with the Optimus T needing a port, and their other current projects it may take them a bit, but I've got faith that our Optimus S owning mods/developers will probably have us a running version of 2.3 in short time. Minimum specs be damned, CM is trying to port 2.3 to the damn G1, and you guys want to think that our phones wont get it... silly rabbits.

Wanted to ask LG about it directly; their email says they don't respond to generalized questions and comments for some reason (though I did send one anyways, got no response). Called a support tech and they said that there was nothing set yet on whether the Optimus line would be getting the update or not - so officially it's not a "no" yet. However it's not yes, either.

EDIT: Just got a callback from LG, they were trying to figure out where it was said that they weren't giving us the update :P

EDITEDIT: Two more callbacks while I was in the shower, no voicemail :(

Would appreciate keeping us updated on anything you hear. As it is, they've been removing all traces of this from that Facebook page as soon as a new comment pops up. Likewise, there's an LG rep that's been replying to some in the engadget story comments. At least they're taking notice.

Haven't received any more calls, but if they're taking notice that's a good thing - maybe they'll give us the update :P However gist of what I was asked/talked about did seem like the Facebook person wasn't authorized to give us a "no" answer.

I have til the 26th to stay inside my 30 day return window so I'll take a wait and see approach for now (since I also need to find a viable replacement, my old phone is on it's last legs).

EDIT: Also might be a good sign, the LG guy said "Getting kicked in the nuts from time to time keeps us honest... "

and

"Isn't it possible that this was an honest mistake? It wouldn't be the first time someone in sales/service/call center didn't have the most updated facts..."

Admittedly something like that is possible, to be honest I've been in a similar situation on the opposite side where the company didn't provide all the facts and I had a bunch of angry nerds yelling at me after I got caught saying something wrong D: Not saying it's right to do that (personally I hate when it happens to me) but it's not uncommon.

Geesh, there are phones out that haven't even gotten 2.2 and you are looking to get 2.3 on this device? LOL....

Ummm.... obviously someone hasn't been reading up on the latest Android news. The Optimus S comes preloaded with Android 2.2 so I dunno what rock you just crawled out of...

You obviously didn't read his post.

Anyway, I don't have a Optimus S (parents do) but I hope you guys get 2.3. The hardware is obviously good enough. Hopefully internal business politics doesn't get in the way. LG would be stupid to not support their best selling smart phone.

Recently LG said they are evaluating the possibility of 2.3 for optimus series and agreed that it was a premature anouncement

I don't think 2.3 will come out so soon on this phone. Though LG haven't as bad as SE when it comes to updates (oh those poor Xperia buyers :D ). If you want the latest updates, then you should stick with the Nexus One or Nexus S.

Don't worry about the 1Ghz thing though, it was just a rumor that's been subsequently shot down.

That's sort of difficult when you are stuck on Sprint (or any other carrier besides T-Mobile). One of the reasons I purchased my Optimus S off-contract from eBay was because I wanted to get out of the 2-year contract game. It didn't hurt that it is an inexpensive phone. Unfortunately I still have a year left on my contract from when I got my Moment. To move to T-Mobile to get a true Google experience phone would not only require me to purchase the phone (or the discounted phone with a 2 year contract with T-Mobile), but also Sprint's ETF. That's either a whole lot of money, or a bit less money but a new two year contract.

Anyway, I know you were just making a point, and so far I'm happy with Sprint and very happy with this phone. Just hoping that LG keeps us in mind for at least one more upgrade cycle.

Duh,,, I know that. I'm saying everyone wants a new update on a phone that just launched with an OS that only a couple other devices have. Seems other vendors are trying to get 2.2 on their current devices and it's been out for well over 6 months.

I just came to post that. Thumbs up, lg.

Yea i figured they would, i don't see why it would be hard like i previously stated. There's no real difference to run gingerbread, to me it looks like it would make our phones even faster, also our phones virtually stock so it shouldn't take long too.

I expected that LG would release gingerbread for the S... Glad to see they confirmed it.

I'm particularly looking forward to the select/copy/paste improvements as well as UI performance improvements due to GPU accelerated UI animations and other general UI performance tweaks.

Remember earlier how I said I emailed LG and got no response? Apparently that was jumping the gun a bit. Received this a bit earlier today:

Granted, LG did say earlier that they'd review the specs required first before making a decision, but I'd thought they were posted already, and it seems odd to send me back a message this late saying "We don't know yet."
