Any reason to stick with Verizon?

I don't actually have unlimited. If I did, this topic probably wouldn't exist lol. I do have 4 GB/mo for about $97/mo so I believe I am saving money over the current lineup of plans. I don't own any other devices with LTE so not being able to share data is a nonissue.

Posts here make me lean towards considering the Galaxy. My upgrade is only 4 months off so I don't mind waiting. I'm just not sure if I want to be in it for another two years. I suppose I should save and make that decision in 4 months.

If youre upgrade is 4 months away, you probably have 8 left on your contract. So, you'll still be facing an ETF for a long time. (Just for consideration in your choices)

I am considering a switch to ATT from Verizon. My motivation is about the price plans. I am not on unlimited. VZ has some nice phone offerings, but I am tired of being nickeled and dimed. If there is a way for them to charge extra for something, they will.

I am in Omaha and AT&Ts LTE is twice as fast as VZ.

ATT and Verizon are just about mirror images of each other for pricing. The Share plans are almost the same with some slight differences at certain levels but not more than five dollars or so. The old family plans were virtually the same with one being barely more expensive depending on the exact makeup of the plan.

Sent from my second brain.. Okay it is the only one working.

Actually, it depends on how many lines and how much data. If you have 6 GB of data ATT goes to $35 per line. I have an employee discount at both, which takes 20% off the data. That cones out to $20 less, plus VZ charges $15 per month to use the Good app and $3 for visual voice mail. Although I use Google voice for VVM, I would get carrier VVM for free with ATT. I can also go to 10GB of data for only $4 more per month.

My only concern is that VZ has excellent LTE saturation in the mid - west.

But the ETF is prorated - it starts at $350 and drops $10 every month you are on contract. Still nothing to sneeze at with 8 months left on the contract.

You are right about the drop to $35 per line but the data is $10 more per month at the 6gb level and higher with ATT than with Verizon. Both ATT and Verizon are $160 for two share plans with 6gb. So if you have 2 lines it is a wash. You do slightly better with ATT if you have 3 or more lines.

Now the Good app is another story which I have no experience with.. Never had a need for it. However ATTs website says that corporate email is $15 per month more per device on the mobile share plans. I am not sure if it is the same thing you are talking about on Verizon.

Is that 4GB for $30 that you got during the double the data program? What plan do you have?

I'm going to guess and say that he has:

1) 450 minutes - $40
2) 4GB "Double Your Data" Promotion - $30
3) Unlimited Texts - $20

I had that plan for the longest time, while I was still with Verizon.

Yeah it is. I have Nationwide 450 mins + Unlimited Text w 4gb. 90/mo altogether but with fees I usually pay around 97/mo

I do have 8 months left on my contract (signed in Dec 2011) so I have plenty of time to mull over my decision.

closest plan on ATT

1) 450 peak minutes, 5000 night/weekend minutes + rollover minutes - $40
2) 3GB data - $30
3) Unlimited Text and mobile to any mobile minutes - $20

So ATT would be the same price for 1GB less data, only 5000 night/weekend minutes (who would use more, though?) BUT you get unlimited mobile to any mobile minutes and rollover minutes.

I think I would stick with the extra 1GB of data. Plus once he gives up the double the data promotion, he can't get it back.

Tmobile just depends on what kind of coverage there is in your area whether it is a viable option or not.

Yeah it is.
See my analysis above for ATT. I would stick with Verizon over ATT. I didn't check out TMobile because they aren't a viable option where I live.

Remember, if you give up the 4GB double the data promo, you can't ever get it back. Most people don't even use 2GB let alone 4GB in a month.

Hang tight to see the X Phone and by August we'll have some great rumors about the next Nexus... on my primary line I'm in the exact same situation, considering the dreaded AT&T because T-Mobile doesn't have service here.

I have 4 lines, which is why it makes sense. I have verified with my company and AT&T that they don't charge for the Good app. It's still a tough decision since I have had great coverage from VZ, but money talks.

Phoenix is no Silicon Valley but we do have good coverage with all the major carriers. I have a friend who has been on T-Mobile for ten years and swears by them. The only issue around here is traveling. I've got family who lives in the northern part of Arizona and reception/data can get kind of dicey in the mountains.

Verizon is getting all the best phones except the one and Nexus lines, but none of them hold a candle to the gs4

sent from the best smart phone (not phablet) on the worst network- the galaxy S III unfortunately on T-Mobile

True, but they give most the nasty branding treatment. As for the GS4, that is argumentative, not fact.

I know what you should do then. Stick with Verizon for 2 more years and give TMobile and Sprint time to get their 4G LTE networks up and running in the places where you travel. Then dump Verizon.

That sounds like a workable plan. Something to think about at least. Thanks for the help.

That's cool. I was not trying to give you a difficult time. I would switch if there was a distinguishable price difference for me. As it is I would pay around $10 more to go to AT&T.

Tmobile is good in the PHX area, kids have it and have no issues. But like you said, the Northern areas and traveling not so. My wife and I get LTE in Prescott and Payson, Tmobile has 2G in Payson and don't remember the Prescott area. Travels to Cali for them are long without me tethering my 3G to them since they get 2G for a few hours in the desert and small towns. The plan you have is good like stated above, I had coworkers get into that Double deal too on a Bionic he paid 1cent for from Amazon. I suggest a used S3 or even a Bionic to hold you over, Bionic sell for like $160-220 on CL and is on ICS and about to get JB. And your Strat can get you like $100-120 if well taken care of.

Not bad, sucks your Sprint Nexus would get 3G in PHX. But my VZW Nexus gets better LTE downloads here and to over half the the population in AZ. No Sprint Wimax or LTE yet! Hope you never leave Chicago anytime soon

Everywhere I travel sprint has lte. Chicago Florida and Texas and sprint making moves to phx soon as in this year.

One issue you face, is your selection of a phone with a slide out keyboard.
It is very likely that the physical keyboard requires special consideration in the OS compared to all other phones with virtual keyboards in common.
My son still has his Strat 1 with Gingerbread on it. Likely he will never see an update.
My Strat 1 was "accidentally" smashed a couple weeks back, and I did the upgrade to the Strat 2.

The Strat 2 came from Verizon with the ICS Ice Cream Sandwich OS 2 weeks ago, but just this Saturday, Verizon pushed Jelly Bean 4.1.2 to my new phone.

I am not sure how long, Verizon and Samsung will keep the OS updates coming for the Stratosphere 2, but it is a "good" start if you want the latest OS and prefer a physical keyboard.

Note:
I put "good" in quotes, since the upgrade to Jelly Bean this weekend crashed my home network router when the Strat 2 tried to connect to my Wifi.
Seems some much older routers have a problem with Jelly Bean, so I'll be updating my gear, but that is a topic for a different thread.
Be prepared for this Wifi issue if your router is old and you get any number of phones that include Jelly Bean including the Strat 2.
