Anybody find Pixel 2 XL Camera HDR pics too dark and fake?

The default setting on Pixel 2XL camera is HDR+. Which also the setting if you want to use portrait. However I find the images look artificial. A bit too dark and skin tone looks off. Technically HDR does that. But since this default and portrait seems to use it automatically, the images don't look that great. I haven't seen this complaint from others. Just wondering if anyone else see this?

They look a little fake to me with how far the dynamic range extends on some of their photos, but I wouldn't say they look bad and I don't find them dark.

For me, I don*t have problems with tone but with darkness. In every shoot with backlit (e.g. setting sun) the image is much too dark so that I wonder if there is HDR at all. This can to some degree be corrected with the "Shadow" slider of the image editor of the Google Photos app, but this is tedious and results are underwhelming (washed off colors).

Regarding skin tone you could correct with the "Tint" and "Skin tone" slider of the Google Photos app.
