I guess this isnt too bad.

But i was wondering if anyone else has this.

I notice when on a phone call that no matter what i set my volume at that i hear a background white noise/hissing sound. SHHHHHHHH it doesnt at all cover up voice. I think call quality of voice is pretty good.

Just dont want to take back to store and get a replacment for this and get one with light leak (which i have under the screen on bottom a little but not noticible unless i tilk phone)

What do you guys think.

Sorry to hear about this. The Thunderbolt has more cons than pros it sounds like.

Hopefully the "dual-core age" will bring major improvements to battery life which will enhance everyone's user experience.

UNFORTUNATELY yes, a little bit. Its not a huge deal but gets a little old. I have gone through a few now due to various probs, dust, dead pixels, light leakage, the first did not have this my current one does. along with dust under the screen.. Hoping the next one is 100% prob free..

Im thinking that this will be fixed with a software update.
Im willing to bet we will get an update soon.

Yes, here too. To be fair though, my Storm 1 on VZW sounded like trash and had huge lag between talking and when the other person would hear you on the original OS. First update fixed it and never had the problem again. Especially with this being the first LTE phone, I'm not surprised we have a little noise.

I bet this gets cleared up with the first official update.

I have a slight hiss on my earpiece, no matter how low I toggle the volume. Another poster here said to activate the hearing aid compatibility and it will make this hiss go away.

It really does.

Problem is that you cannot change the volume while this setting is active, however, it should work for quiet situations. When I am in a noisy setting, I can't hear the hiss.

I hope this is helpful. I am also getting a bluetooth headset, and that too may help quell this issue.

I guess I would be interested to know if someone else has success with bluetooth.

I've used a wired headset with the phone and i've heard the whitenoise on the headset. So i'm guessing it's not something with the earpiece speaker at all. Hopefully it's software that can be fixed with an update.

That was me with the hearing aid suggestion. I went to exchange my phone yesterday at a noisy VZW store and they wouldn't do it because they couldn't notice the hiss because the store was too loud. It's not too big a deal, but it is annoying, especially since some rave about the call quality. Going to try to exchange the phone today, because it doesn't want to stay connected to my wifi at work.

Most phones have a slight background hiss when the speaker is active. Some are more noticeable than others. I haven't noticed this on my Thunderbolt yet, but everyone has different hearing.

I wouldn't make a big deal out of it unless it is annoying. This phone has the loudest and clearest audio I have experienced in a while, easily on par with my old StarTac.

Yes indeed. That was an excellent suggestion and I'm sorry I didn't credit you personally. :( I got lost in the posts in here.

Again - like flashpiti said - the hearing aid setting works well if you need to quiet the hiss - like in a quiet setting.

I also have noticed that when I plug in my Sony headphones (I found some higher end ones refurbed on ebay ) and there is NO hiss on them. I have some Skullcandy and they do hiss but their sound quality is mainly for TVs at the Y. I have some Woodees coming in the mail and I am getting a new Plantronics bluetooth headset. I will report back how all of this works out.

Flashpiti - I hope that if you want to exchange - you get the chance. Here in KC there is an "authorized reseller" that if you go there during the early afternoon, you can here the crickets chirping it's so dead. Might there be a quieter time somewhere to try again? I am still debating whether my hiss is enough to exchange or if I want to use the hearing aid option and live with the rest of the background noise.

The Thunderbolt is actually for me the quietest and clearest on calls I've ever owned. People's voices sound like they are talking to me from one of those soundproof rooms. If I had to pick one thing I like about the Tbolt the most it's call quality. I've never experienced anything like it. I've tried to hear static and even when I strain to hear...I get nothing but silence behind the caller's voice. Now, my Nexus One on AT&T did exactly what you describe, as well as every other device I've owned previous to Bolt.

i've been through 2 thunderbolt, one had white noise, the other didn't.

so you might have a defective one if yours hisses.

Interesting. The way I'd best describe it is if you take an older stereo with a tape player, switch it to the tape function but don't put the tape in it, and then turn up the speaker volume. It's just kind of a hiss/white noise and happens regardless of how high or low you have the volume on the phone turned up. I'll switch it this afternoon and see if the new one has the same problem.

I went to a different store today and exchanged the phone for another bolt. Huge difference, with this one having a slight hiss that's barely noticeable. I'm a much happier camper now.

OK Well I'm sold. I have the hiss while I am on calls with my TB as well. It has actually gotten worse since I have had it. It was barely noticeable at first. Then yesterday when I was on the phone it was terrible. Guess I will be exchanging my Bolt the next free day I get.

On a note for exchanging phones, Since this is my first android device will there be anything I need to do before I exchange to make the transition go smoother?

I love the phone except for the call quality. I always hear the "white noise" when listening through the phone earpiece. The speaker phone sounds perfect. I emailed HTC tech support to find out of there will be a future software release to hopefully take care of it. As per another post, if you turn the hearing aid option on, the noise is gone, but you can't control the call volume.
